The Rude awakening

Devendra's boots echoed through the hallway as he returned from the training grounds, his muscles still taut from the day's rigorous work. The sweat that clung to his skin mixed with the dust of battle drills, a reminder of the life he had chosen, one of blood, discipline, and unyielding duty.

His mind, however, was elsewhere.

In recent days, Abeera had been relentless in her efforts to worm her way back into his heart, and maybe, just maybe she was a little bit successful, at least in her ..... of building up that fallen reputation of hers.

As he turned the corner, there she was—waiting for him, draped in her finest saree, her hair perfectly braided, eyes wide and shimmering with practiced devotion. Her beauty was undeniable, but to Devendra, it had become a veneer, a mask that could no longer conceal the woman behind it. She had always been good with words, and in the past, her voice had been a balm to his war-weary soul. But now, something inside him had shifted.

"My dear Devendra," she greeted softly, her voice lilting, almost melodic. She stepped toward him, her hips swaying with deliberate grace. "You've returned so late. I was worried." He stiffened at the sound of her voice, a knot of discomfort tightening in his chest. In the old days, those words might have soothed him, conjuring memories of nights in the war camps when she'd whispered promises of devotion to him, calming his nerves with soft reassurances. But now, after everything, after Padmini's death, the rumors of his son's demise haunting his mind, those same words grated on his ears like lies.

He forced a polite smile, stepping past her as if the act of walking away could distance him from the discomfort gnawing at his insides. "You shouldn't wait up for me, Abeera."

But Abeera was not so easily dismissed. She moved swiftly to block his path, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears that he had come to recognize as a calculated weapon. "You've been so distant lately," she said, her voice quivering just enough to sound convincing. "I thought we could talk, like we used to... when you would come back from the front, and I'd sit by your side." Her hand reached out to touch his arm, but Devendra recoiled slightly, the contact stirring a storm of emotions he struggled to suppress.

He didn't want to confront her, not now at least, when his heart was so preoccupied with the truth that lingered around Padmini's death. Abeera's face, her pleas, they all felt like poison, seeping into his soul.

"Abeera," he said softly, trying to temper his voice. "It's not the same anymore. I need to—" She interrupted him, her voice taking on a more desperate tone.

" No! I know I've failed you in some ways, but I've been doing everything I can to make things right. I've prayed for you every day. I've written poetry, sang songs of devotion—haven't you noticed?" She lowered her eyes, her lips quivering with the semblance of vulnerability.

"I'm your wife, you promised me my love.... Oh my Devendra. Don't you remember the times when you would say I was the only one who understood you?"

Devendra clenched his jaw, an unfamiliar rage rising in his chest. He remembered those words. He had said them, during those wretched years, before everything had spiraled out of control, before he had known the true depth of what he'd lost ...... before he'd realized what a fool he had been.

"You're acting like a fool," he said through gritted teeth, barely keeping his anger in check. "This game you're playing....... it's not going to work this time." Hearing this, Abeera's expression faltered, but only for a moment.

She straightened her posture, wiping at her eyes. "I'm not playing any game......  I'm your wife, Devendra, And you know it! Or have you forgotten what that means? Do you plan to throw me aside for Ritu? Or, are you too wrapped up in your own guilt to even see what I've been doing for you?" The accusation cut through him, but instead of guilt, it sparked a surge of fury.  His hands curled into fists at his sides, the control he had been holding onto slipping through his grasp.
