"Uhmm, I'm just going to be honest with you guys. I have nothing prepared for today." Deveny tells us.

She sits in her desk chair with the backrest turned back. She has her hair in a bun, and as always, she is wearing her slippers. Not dressed like your usual teacher.

"I have our schedule, but we can't do any of these things."

"Why?" Josh asks.

"Because no one has the right books. All of you guys have the wrong books. Giovanni has the wrong math books, you miss two or three books, Jeremiah has the wrong books, and Shantiny has the wrong books. All of Shantinys' books are wrong she has books of last year, so she has nothing."

Yeah, that's fucked up.

"This year, when you guys do have your books, I will be focusing only on your exams only. The exams are in April. And that may seem far away but there will be days where school is canceled.

It's almost autumn vacation and then we also have the Christmas holidays. During Pentecost you guys are also free. So believe me April is not far away."

Oh yeah I forgot about that, autumn vacation is end October already.

"I will think about what we'll do for today. You guys can do something for yourselves and then go to PE.
After that, I don't know. That was all."

I grab my phone like everyone else and open my Instagram.

"Shantiny?" I hear someone call my name.

"Shantiny?" I look up and see Kayden with his arm raised and a pen in his hand.

"Were you gonna trow that pen at me?" I ask in a, I guess you could call a disappointed tone.

"Maybe." He laughs, "You weren't responding."

"Yeah, no shit, I'm wearing noise canceling headphones, you idiot."

"I was so drunk this weekend." He bursts out laughing.

He drinks and smokes but is still good at sports.

Last year, when we were doing the shuttle run test, Kayden got to the 10th stairs.
We were all impressed, but none of us were shocked.

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was the teacher who made a comment about how much better he would be if he didn't smoke and drink.

Crazy.

"Shantiny!" Josephine yells, running towards me and then jumping on my back. "Where are you heading?"

"I'm going to the bakery. I have to get something to drink. We just had PE. You can come with me. But please get off my back?" I ask her.

Josephine. My little sister.

We met at a group home when I was 11, and she was 8. We aren't family by blood, but I do see her as my little sister.

After I left the grouphome, she felt like I had left her, specifically. I didn't have a choice but to leave.

And it's not like I left her, I left the
grouphome.

We still had phone calls.

She was so scared to go to high school, but when I told her about Mailo and Jamie, she was relieved.

I should've never told her about Mailo, though.

She's wearing baggy jeans and an oversized sweater. And she has her long brown hair loose.
"Oh, yes, of course. Let's go.
I have PE after the lunch break. I don't want to."
