You manage to fall on your cool bed with the help of Jenna. Giselle was fast enough to throw a towel underneath you, because surely you would have made the bedding dirty.
Your clothes stick to your back from the sweat. Your body is restless and in agony. Your head lightheaded.
“Okay y/n, let me assess the damage.” The nurse removes your wet and filthy hand from your arm.
“Well?” Jenna asks, impatiently.
“Okay, it’s possible to remove.” Says nurse Harris, unaffected by Jenna.
You start to drift off to a state of sleep, trying to forget the pain. You feel a cold wet wipe on your arm and then a tiny injection.
“Can someone hold y/n down please?” Nurse Harris asks.
Your eyes shoot open. “What?”
You see Giselle and Jenna jump in. Jenna at your legs and Giselle at your other arm.
“Take a deep breath y/n.” Nurse Harris instructs, you hear tools next to you. “I’m going to remove the bullet.”
Giselle places a small cloth in your mouth.
Your breathing is irregular. You try to prepare yourself mentally for what is to come. Your eyes awaiting the feeling of tools digging around in your skin.
“Geez!” You scream in pain as the nurse is busy with your bullet wound. Your eyes burning from your sweat.
You hear the clank of metal on a plate. You release a deep exhale the moment Giselle removes the cloth.
“There we go.” Nurse Harris announces preparing a kit. “You’re going to need stitches. “Try to stay still.” She instructs.
You close your eyes again this time awaiting the needle. “Ah!” You shout once it digs into your skin.
“Y/n can you be quiet?” Jenna says behind the nurse, cross-armed.
“Well sorry if I got shot in the damn arm!” You retort, breathless.
“If you didn’t interfere with my business, you wouldn’t have been laying here right now.”
“If you just allowed Dane to leave a long time ago, I wouldn’t have to be here at all!” You shout.
“Then your friend should’ve kept his long fingers to his damn self!” Jenna responds just as irritated.
“Miss Ortega, please this isn’t going to help the patient.” The nurse intervenes. Jenna’s eyes go from the nurse and back at you.
You turn away. You do not want to see Jenna’s face. You are tired of the arguments. Tired of this whole mess that you are in.
“Just get some rest.” Jenna’s standing at your bedroom door now. “I need you on your post as soon as possible.” You hear the door close.
She left you alone with Giselle and the nurse. Giselle was more of a comfort than anyone else.
She brings you a cloth to wipe away your sweaty face and wet wipes to clean your bloodied hands.
“You’ll have to remain in bed for roughly seven days.” Nurse Harris informs, balling up her gloves. Her eyes narrow on Giselle. “That means no work given by Miss Ortega.”
“I’ll inform her.”
“That will just cause a delay in the healing. I’ll be back in a few days to check up on you.”
“Thank you, nurse.” You manage to say.
The nurse left you with some pain killers and Giselle offered you water. She even gave you a change of T-shirt.
“Thank you for taking care of Miss Ortega.” Giselle says.
To be honest you do not know why you jumped in front of it. You were not even initiated yet. She is nothing to you. She is your enemy.
“Why do you even care about her?” You say swallowing the pills. “She’s cruel.”
Giselle sits at the edge of your bed after you climbed under the cool sheets.
“People are not all that they seem, you know. People do certain things to survive. This isn’t what Jenna wanted but was born into.”
“What do you mean?” You ask setting the glass on the table.
“She had other dreams in mind. To be a normal twenty something year old.” Giselle explains. “Her father told her, because of her name, no one will ever genuinely believe she could be different. Everyone would stay close to her for the power or just fear her, but no one would actually stick around as a friend.”
You click your tongue. “I mean who could ever be friends with an Ortega?”
Giselle stands up to help you adjust your pillow.
“You did good.” She says after a while, changing the subject. “The meds should kick in soon.”
“That was hell.” You laugh weakly.
“In future, you need to listen to my instructions, y/n. I don’t want this to happen again.”
“I’m sorry.” You apologize. “Are you going to be in trouble?”
“Probably.” she shrugs. “But don’t worry about me. Learn to worry about yourself a bit, huh.”
“I’m really sorry, Giselle.” You feel your speech become slower.
She gives you a gentle smile. “I won’t be around too often, so I’ll ask Marissa to help you through your recovery period.”
“I’ll just be here...” Your eyes start to feel heavy. Your head foggy.
“You don’t have to be bored doing it. You have Netflix and any other things you want to watch.” she points out. “Just ask if there’s anything else you might need.”
“Sounds good.” You force your eyes to open.
“Looks like the meds are finally kicking in. Rest well.” Giselle smiles.
She takes the towel and cloth and heads towards the door.
As soon as you hear it close, you let your eyes close too. The pain starting to feel like a distant memory. If only this hellhole was a memory, you wish.
