Golfball and tennis ball had been working on their "experiment" for a couple of weeks, it had been going well. They were working in the lab when tennis ball got a call on his phone "hello.....I'm fine I'm working with my girlfriend in her lab........yea I told you about her......her name is golfball........oh that's not necessary..........ok..I said ok, we will see you Friday." He looked over at golfball "do you and your parents want to meet my parents?"
Golfball's eyes widened. She never met her mother and her relationship with her dad was.........complicated. It wasn't that he didn't care, it was just that he had very high expectations, he would always instill golfball with the need and drive to win (no matter the cost), she hadn't even told him that she lost the most recent season yet. "Golfie?" tennis ball asked, "I'd love to meet your parents, as for my parents my mother can't join but my father...." She glanced over at the notebook "should be free, but I should warn you he can be difficult" "that's fine, my parents can be.........a lot"
Friday night
The night came (tennis ball had texted his parents the details) they went to a restaurant it was odd there were no seats but they did have stools to stand on for shorter objects. Golfball and tennis ball arrived together, they found their table and waited for their parents. "So what are your parents like TB?" Golfball asked before he could respond "THERE'S OUR BOY!" an unfamiliar voice yelled
Two tennis rackets ran over, they were the same size as TB but they felt like they towered over him. "Hello I'm racket and this is my lovely wife paddle! You must be the mysterious golfball. It's a pleasure to meet you" racket immediately shook her foot (with his) overly excitedly "you look like just a darling little ball, how did our little tenny manage to scoop you up!?" Paddle asked over enthusiastically while rubbing the fuzz on her son's head. "Mom please calm down we're in a restaurant" tennis ball requested, "oh I'm sure this little lady understands" replied his father "from what we've seen on the show she seems like the perfect little object to get you back on track" paddle said. "I am on track" tennis ball argued.
Almost instantly a golf club walked into the restaurant. He looked around unimpressed with the restaurant, he noticed golfball and walked over to the table, golfball felt herself shrink in his presence. "Golfball, stand up straight, in public." Racket immediately reached out to shake "pleasure to meat you!" Golf club looked down at tennis ball "we'll see." He responded
"Golf club made eye contact with tennis ball "how do you two know each other?" "Well we met a few months before the first season of bfdi, and we've been working together ever since..........we only started dating recently." Tennis ball replied nervously "I see, would you say this partnership is the reason why golfball has yet to win a season?" Golf club asked.
Everyone at the table went silent. "I wouldn't say it's TB's fault I lose" golfball said clearly trying to put a stop to this before anything could happen "our boy loses too! Maybe it's her fault!" Racket accused "highly unlikely my daughter has always been top of her classes, leader of every extra curricular, and has won ALMOST every competition she has entered" he glared at golf ball quickly on that almost. He knows.
"Listen here! Our boy may not have as many trophies but he is brilliant! Plus from what we've seen he clearly has more social abilities than your daughter!" Paddle claimed while clinging to tennis ball "my daughter........."
Golfball walked out, tennis ball excused himself to find her. "So by a lot did you mean overly clingy?" Golfball asked. "Yea, and by difficult did you mean, overly hostile and rude?"TB asked "yea" golfball responded "is it weird to say I'd rather have your parents? Yea they're clingy but their eyes don't sting like knives" Golfball said "it's not great, I almost never got alone time growing up, it was like they thought if I left the room I'm not coming back, plus they think I'm lost almost, they think I can't make my own decisions" "I understand, for me though growing up, if I didn't win I was a disappointment, failure was never an option." Golfball explained "I actually never really wanted you to meet him" "then why did you agree to this?" Tennis ball asked "because I guessed your parents couldn't be as bad and they invited mine, plus I couldn't come up with an excuse to not invite him, that you wouldn't see through" she explained "yea I have gotten good at telling when your hiding something" he chuckled.
Golfball lied her head on tennis ball and after a few minutes the two went back inside. When they arrived at their table their parents didn't seem as towering. "Good news! We've come to an agreement, with golfball leading you two can't become two of the most highly regarded scientific minds the field has ever seen" paddle said as soon as she saw them. "That's what you three were talking about when we left?" Tennis ball asked "actually we were discussing how this relationship could affect your future and how it could benefit my daughter, and how she could use her feelings to still succeed." Golf club said brashly. "But we assured him you're also a genius and that you two working together could only be more effective" racket stated.
"This is my relationship not a business transaction! I know nothing about golf club except that he sees me as an obstacle!" tennis ball blurted out "and all I know about racket and paddle is that they keep ignoring how great their son is now because they want to focus on how he could be better in the future!" Golfball claimed.
"This dinner was a mistake" tennis ball stated he walked out of the restaurant golfball looked at golf club "for the best he wasn't good enough for you anyway" "no" she said eyeing him "I'm too good for you" and followed TB out.
The two were in her...their lab golfball was on the verge of tears, tennis ball was comforting her, they just held each other.
Meeting the parents didn't go as expected, I had hoped to discover stability in tennis ball's family but that was unsuccessful, but I did learn one thing, I'm not alone, I don't have to be, and we have each other to get through this
