Inventing Love ♡Newt♡

CH.28

The door opens revealing people in large white coats stained with blood laying on the ground, lights flickering above them. Nick limps in with Newt's help, her eyes trail to the blood on the walls but they continue to walk.

They walk past another room, bodies laying on a table with a cloth over them, blood staining the cloth. As they continue to walk forward Nick looks down at a deceased man on the floor with a gun by his hand.

Using her bad leg she kicked it to the side, they didn't need anyone picking that up. All was heard was their heavy breathing as they entered the larger main room.

"What happened here?"

There was a long table in the middle of the room, screens over it and chairs around the table. Along the walls were more screens and chairs. Lights were still flickering, steam was coming out of the burst pipes and pools of blood near each person.

"So they were watching us." Newt let go of Nick so they could look at separate things, "This whole time."

Nick walked over to a table using the things around to support her, she looked through the glass seeing Thomas looking at her. Although his eyes were blank as if he was thinking back to something.

Instead of questioning it she looked down at the buttons on the table, there was one flashing green with a note reading 'press me'. She checked underneath the table for anything dangerous it could be attached to before pressing down on the button.

A bigger screen in front of the room lit up showing a video with a woman dressed in white. Nick limped closer to it as she reconigsed the woman. Her eyebrows furrowed until it clicked, it was the woman from her memory.

"Hello. My name is Doctor Ava Paige. Im director of Operations of the World Catastrophe Killzone Department."

"Wicked." Nick muttered.

"If you're watching this, that means you have successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you.. But circumstances seem to have prevented it. I'm sure by now you must be all very confused... angry.. Frightened. I can only assure you that everything that's happened to you.. everything we've done to you.. it was all done for a reason."

Minho scoffed "Reason my ass. She can live here for three years."

The rest of the Gladers had joined Nick in front of the screen watching the video. Behind Ava Paige doctors were rushing around with a red light going off.

"You won't remember.. But the sun has scorched our world." A video of the sun showed then multiple videos of fires and explosions. "Billions of lives lost to fire.. Famine.. differing on a global scale."

The video switches to show a pile of burnt dead bodies which made most of them gasp. "The fallout was unimaginable." Ava Paige was shown again with her lips pressed tightly together. "What came after was worse. We called it the Flare."

The video changed to show what they could only assume was parasites attacking the blood cells. Then a brain appeared with black stuff coming out of it.

The video changes again to show a person laying on a table with two doctors holding him down. His eyes were bloodshot and he had purple and black veins all around his head. He was screaming and he had his teeth bared.

"It is violent.. unpredictable.. incurable. Or so we thought."

The video changes back to Ava Paige. "In time a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly there was a reason to hope for a cure. But finding it would not be easy. The young would have to be tested, even sacrificed.. inside harsh environments... where their brain activity could be studied. All in an effort to understand.. what makes them different.. What makes you different. You may not realise it.. but you're very important. Unfortunately your trials have only just begun."
