Chapter 17. The Funfair (Part 1)

August 13, 1994, Saturday.

Mrs. Guan woke up at a little past seven. After washing up, she was about to prepare breakfast, when she saw Guan Xuchen coming out of his room. Curious, she asked, "Xuchen, why are you up so early? Why don't you sleep in a little longer?"

Guan Xuchen shook his head and answered, "Mom, do you forget? I'm going to Dong Fang Amusement Park with Gao Xinglang for a funfair today."

"Oh, right. Well, be careful, both of you." Mrs. Guan thought for a moment, still puzzled. "But didn't you say the funfair would not start until ten in the morning? And you and Gao Xinglang agreed to meet at the bus stop at nine. Why get up so early?"

"I still need to pack my things. Oops, Mom, never mind. I need to pee." With that, Guan Xuchen ran to the bathroom.

Around nine in the morning, Gao Xinglang spotted Guan Xuchen from a distance at the bus stop and waved with a smile. As Guan Xuchen approached, Gao Xinglang pointed at the bulging schoolbag on his back and asked in surprise, "Soupy, why are you carrying so many books? We're going to a funfair today, not back to school."

"Lang, I'm not bringing any books," Guan Xuchen replied with a smile. "There are just snacks and water in my schoolbag."

Seeing Gao Xinglang empty-handed, he was also surprised. "Lang, aren't you bringing anything?"

"Bring what?" Gao Xinglang sounded puzzled. "I just need the tickets and some money, right?"

Guan Xuchen nodded with an "Oh". Then, seeing the bus approaching, he called out to Gao Xinglang to get on.

There weren't many people on the bus. After they bought tickets from the conductor, they found two seats and started chatting happily.

Gao Xinglang looked at the bulging schoolbag in Guan Xuchen's hands and asked curiously, "Soupy, what delicious treats do you bring exactly?"

Guan Xuchen put on a mysterious air. "Lang, take a guess."

"Chocolate? Peanuts? Ice cream cones?" Gao Xinglang said three kinds of snacks, but Guan Xuchen shook his head at each guess. Gao Xinglang sighed, "Aren't these all your favorite snacks? I give up."

Guan Xuchen burst out laughing, "Lang, you're kidding me! We're going so far away. Any ice cream would have melted by now. Actually, I've brought..." He paused for dramatic effect, "Ta-da!"

With that, he unzipped his schoolbag and pulled out a green-wrapped snack. On the packaging, there was a witch holding a mysterious orb, and the words "Bok Bok Sing" were printed in bold.

"Bok Bok Sing?" Gao Xinglang took the packet of puffed snacks, his eyes lighting up. "This is my favorite!"

Guan Xuchen smiled and produced another packet of snacks from his bag.

"Wow, and bubble biscuits too!" Gao Xinglang looked at the packet of round little biscuits and asked happily, "Soupy, how did you know I love Bok Bok Sing and bubble biscuits?"

Guan Xuchen smiled but didn't answer directly. He just said, "I'm glad you like them, Lang."

Gao Xinglang said cheerfully, "Of course I do! It's still half an hour before we reach Dong Fang Amusement Park. Why don't we have some Bok Bok Sing now?"

Guan Xuchen nodded and smiled, "Sounds great!"

So Gao Xinglang opened the packet in his hand and happily shared the snacks with Guan Xuchen.

Half an hour later, the bus pulled up in front of Dong Fang Amusement Park at the foot of Baiyun Mountain.

As soon as they entered the park, Guan Xuchen started running excitedly, then turned to Gao Xinglang and said, "Lang, this park is so huge! It's much bigger than Children's Park or Cultural Park!"
