January 28, 1994, Friday morning. Cheng Xianchu (pron.: cheng shyen choo), the class monitor, posted the class rank of the final exams on the wall next to the blackboard. When the students of Class 6, Junior One returned to the classroom, they gathered around to check it out and burst into laughter and chatter.
Today was the last day of the first semester. The students had just finished their final exams a few days ago, and the teachers would be going over the papers later. Winter vacation would start tomorrow. Therefore everyone was relaxed.
Guan Xuchen managed to squeeze in and read through the list. The top performer was the class monitor, Cheng Xianchu, followed by the Chinese subject representative, Wu Yixin, the study secretary, Cai Yunfei, and the Maths subject representative, Feng Yuhua. Then he saw his own name and results: 92 points in Chinese, 85 in Maths, 100 in English, a total of 277 points in the three main subjects, ranking fifth in the class and 24th in the entire grade.
"That's one spot better than the midterm exams," Guan Xuchen thought happily.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, are you guys done yet? If you're done, move aside and let us take a look too." Ao Feifan and a few other students who hadn't seen the results yet shouted from behind.
Guan Xuchen ignored them and continued to scan the list, until he finally saw Gao Xinglang's results and ranking. A smile appeared at the corner of his mouth as he stepped back from the crowd.
At this time, Gao Xinglang returned. Seeing the crowd, he asked Guan Xuchen curiously, "Soupy, what are they looking at?"
"It's the grades and rankings of the final exams," Guan Xuchen replied casually.
"Really? I bet you did great, Soupy," Gao Xinglang asked tentatively.
"It's not bad. I've moved up one spot in the overall ranking compared to the midterms," Guan Xuchen smiled slightly.
"So...so did you see my grades? Did I make it into the 200 of the whole grade?" Gao Xinglang asked nervously.
"Alas," Guan Xuchen sighed softly before frowning, "Well, I don't even know what to say."
"Oh, no, did I do poorly on the exams? Come on..." Gao Xinglang deflated when he saw Guan Xuchen's expression.
"Well, go see for yourself." Guan Xuchen pointed at the class rank.
Heart pounding, Gao Xinglang squeezed his way to the front and started scanning the list from the bottom up. After searching for over a dozen names without finding his own, he began to feel both nervous and impatient. Then in the middle of the list, he saw his own name and results: 80 points in Chinese, 82 in Maths, 75 in English, a total of 237 points in the three main subjects, ranking 26th in the class and 188th in the entire grade.
"Yes, I've made it into the top 200 in the whole grade. I can make the basketball team, I can make the basketball team!" Gao Xinglang shouted excitedly. He withdrew from the crowd and pointed at the class rank and said excitedly to Guan Xuchen, "Soupy, did you see that? I rank 188th in the whole grade! I can make the basketball team!"
Guan Xuchen said with a bright smile, "Congratulations, Lang!"
A puzzled look crossed Gao Xinglang's face, "But why did you..."
Guan Xuchen replied with a mischievous glint in his eyes, "What I meant just now was, I don't even know what to say when you've made such a big progress." With that, he laughed out loud.
"Ah, you're teasing me, Soupy." Gao Xinglang pretended to be angry and reached out to tickle Guan Xuchen's waist, sending him into a fit of laughter. Gao Xinglang watched Guan Xuchen giggling and thought he looked like a playful kitten.
