“Would you like a spicy ramen? This time it's free since you're tutoring my son. Ryu never told me you two were classmates.” Ryu's father spoke.
I nervously chuckled as I waved my hand in dismissal, “There's no need for that Mr. Sanada. I just had dinner before I came over.”
“I see. But if you change your mind, I'll be downstairs.” He then completely left. I look back to Ryu who was also smiling at me.
“So, where were we?”
“The cross multiply.”
“Right, so after you take the x, you cross multiply it with y. For this one, you take 4 and cross multiply it with 6.”
Ryu stares at the paper for a moment before answering, “Hm, I get it.”
I smiled. I am now in their house, specifically his room where I am tutoring him 3 times a week after school.
I'm glad Ryu easily understand easily when I tutor him. But I confused. I used the same method the teacher's use in teaching so how come he doesn't understand them but understands me. Maybe his too far to hear? His mind drifts off somewhere? Sleeps?
I gave him some practice questions which he answered with ease. He was very smart. Upon checking it, my mind drifted back to my conversation with Yoshida-san 2 weeks ago.

“You and Ryu...are you two friends?”
“We are—”
“—Ryu and I are best friends.”
During my first day at Kitahoro High upon entering the classroom, I saw her with a bright smile which looked like she was excited to have a new classmates. I assumed she wanted to be friends so upon meeting her gaze, I smiled back.
After class, I saw here again. She was changing to her black shoes. Mine was only next to her so I approached her, “Hi.” I said with a small smile. She just nodded and left as if refusing to make a conversation with me.
Maybe she is jealous. After all, Ryu was always around me. If I only knew they were close friends, I would've distanced myself. It did look like I was snatching Ryu from her.

“Hey.” I snapped from my thoughts when I noticed Ryu's face was close to mine, tilted. He moved and was now sitting next to me as he watched me reaction.
“h-hm?”
“You're spacing out.”
I softly chuckled nervously, “I was just thinking.”
“Of what?” Ryu was a quiet guy but once something attracts his attention, he will be nosy.
I thought of a good moment why while lightly taping my fingers on the table, “Ryu?” He hummed in reply as he gaze down at the practice questions I was checking, “You and Yoshida-san...” His head tilted down but his gaze suddenly moved to the corner of his eyes, looking at me. Seems like he's interested.
“...Are you two—”
“—No.” He firmly spoke. Wait...so they're not friends? I'm confused. But Yoshida-san said....
“You two are not friends?”
He stopped for a good moment as if contemplating. It took him at least 8 seconds before answering, “Just Friends.”
So they are friends. Why did he said they weren't earlier? Did he thought I was asking a different question? I wonder what it was.
“Did she say anything else to you?”
I nodded in reply, “She was just asking if we were friends.”
“What did you say?” He asked back. I told him I said we were friends before he subtly shift his gaze away, “Friends.” He muttered before looking back to me, “What did she say back?”
“She said you two were best friends.” Ryu was just silently, thinking quietly as I look at him. His expression was always stoic so it was hard to read him. He was a closed book.
“Hm, yeah. Just friends.” He bluntly added. He placed his elbow in the table to support his head as he gazed at me intendedly, “You're a smart girl.”
“I know you know by now why she's like that. I see how she looks at you and.... it's not your fault. If you're planning to keep a distance, don't. She's just clingy but... harmless.”
He easily read my mind.
“But I don't want her being angry at me—” I explaid.
“I'll talk to her—”
“—Don't.” I placed my hand on his hand that was resting on the table. His eyes didn't tear away from me. He instead placed his other hand on top of mine.
My eyes soften from the sudden contact, “Then stay. Stay close.” I felt a stir in my stomach. It was a familiar feeling, like the one in the nurse's office.
“You don't have to—”
“—I want to.”
“But Ryu—”
“—(Y/n).”
Ryu and I always argue but nevertheless, he always won. I just couldn't resist him. He was always close and made me feel all tingly while making his point.
“Okay.” He nodded in satisfaction. It suddenly felt hot even though the weather was rainy and cold. I looked away, continuing to check his answers from the practice questions earlier.
He just stayed close, watching over me and not even trying to be subtle.
“(Y/n).” Ryu spoke. I hummed I reply, “Are you joining the trip in Okinawa?” My ears perked.
Right. That's next month.
