“—Jimin, Jimin.”

Jimin regained consciousness as he felt someone lightly slapping his cheek. He opened his eyes to see V worriedly peering into his face.

“Are you alright?” V asked.

“…What happened?” Jimin asked as he gazed absently at V’s face, unable to grasp what was going on.

“You passed out. I’m sorry for pushing you like that.” V looked thoroughly dejected as he kissed Jimin on the forehead.

“Oh, that’s what happened. But it’s not your fault, V. I egged you on.”

“Even so, I was an idiot for getting carried away. I can’t believe I couldn’t control myself.”

It was so endearing to see V look genuinely sad that it filled Jimin with a bittersweet feeling. He lifted his tired arms and cradled V’s head to his chest.

“I was happy, though. For you to lose yourself in me like that.”

“Let me make it up to you,” V said as he nuzzled Jimin’s neck.

“Make it up to me?”

“Yeah. You didn’t get to come. I’ll be gentle this time. —Can I?”

There was no reason to refuse his suggestion for a second round. Just as Jimin was about to smile and nod, he was interrupted by a cell phone ringing.

“That’s me,” V said, getting up and grabbing the cell phone placed on the writing desk.

“Hey, Rubi?”

The single phrase was enough to make Jimin tense up.

“Ah, no. —Is that so? Alright. Thanks. I’ll see you later.”

V’s expression was rigid as he hung up the phone. Jimin instinctively knew. The time had come for them to return to reality. The show was over. The curtain was coming down on their blissful night.

“Jimin.”

“I know.” Jimin got up and off the bed. “Do I at least have time to take a shower?”

“Yeah. —Jimin, I’m sorry. Rubi said she’s at the bar drinking with Egan, and wants to know if I’d like to join them.”

V’s target was Egan. There was no way he would pass up a chance to get close with him.

“No need to explain. I’ll be out in five minutes.” Jimin headed straight to the shower naked, and let the hot stream of water wash away the remnants of their intimacy.

He knew he was supposed to be feeling sad, but his heart felt numb and empty. He mechanically dried himself off and returned to the room, where V was already dressed and waiting, sitting on the edge of the bed. He had hung Jimin’s suit on a hanger.

Once Jimin was dressed and ready, they left the room together. A heavy air fell over them, and both of them avoided looking each other in the eye.

“I’m going up. You get on the elevator first,” V said as he pressed the elevator button. Jimin got on the elevator going down, and pressed the button for the first floor.

Was this really the end? Was this it?

Just as the door was about to close, Jimin found himself pushing the open button. He didn’t want them to part like this. He was overcome with the impulse to say something.

The door opened again, and the two men looked at each other from inside and outside the elevator.

“V. If I told you I’d quit the FBI and help you instead, what would you say?”
