Jimin slung his backpack over his shoulder and opened the front door.
The pomeranian was stretched out lazily on the front porch.
“See ya,” Jimin said, giving the pomeranian dog a pat on the head before looking over to V, who was watering the garden.
“V, I’ll get going now.”
V turned around, still holding the hose. He squinted as he looked up at Jimin.
“Alright,” he said briefly. “I’ll drive you to the airport. Hold on a minute and I’ll get my keys.” V wiped his hands on the hem of his shirt as he clambered up the porch.
“You don’t have to. I’ll take the bus.”
V told him not to feel bad about it, but Jimin was firm. He felt like his resolve would crumble if V came to see him off at the airport. He’d done such a good job of holding himself in this far – he didn’t want to say something stupid to V at the last minute and caused him to worry.
“—Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Let’s part ways here. Thanks for everything. —I’m glad I was able to see you doing well.”
Jimin hesitated a moment before offering his right hand.
He and V were going to part ways as friends. That way, perhaps he would be able to come visit V again when some time had passed and the pain in his heart had dulled.
V reached out a little brusquely and shook Jimin’s hand.
“I’m glad I was able to see you, too. Take care.”
Jimin’s heart ached at the warmth of V’s hand in his, a sensation he hadn’t felt in so long.
Once upon a time, they had sought each other so passionately. His heart had yearned so strongly for V, almost driven insane by longing. But now—
“—You take care, too, V.”
Jimin let go and hopped down the stairs. After creating a little distance between them, he turned back to V and smiled.
No matter where I am, I’ll always be praying for you to find peace. I’ll always pray for your happiness.
Those were Jimin’s words when they parted ways at Schelger Prison, and the night when they reunited in DC. But V didn’t need those words anymore. He no longer needed Jimin’s prayers to find happiness.
That was why Jimin murmured those words, but only in his heart.
“Goodbye, V.”
Just as he turned to walk away, V’s small voice reached his ears.
“…Don’t go, Jimin.”
Jimin thought he had heard wrong, and couldn’t immediately bring himself to turn around.
“Don’t go, Jimin. Please don’t leave.”
This time, it sounded clearer. But Jimin still couldn’t bring himself to turn around.
“The only time my heart is at peace is when I’m thinking about you.”
It almost sounded like Jimin’s inward prayer had reached him.
“I can’t be happy without you.”
How could he ever forget those words? He had said the exact same thing to V once. When they had sneaked out of the party venue at the Marquiladin, V had told him to forget about him and find happiness. And Jimin had answered thus:
“I can’t. I can’t be happy without you…!”
He felt like time had turned back to that moment.
