"Adam..."
"I'm scared.."
"I don't wanna die.."
Lyne was laying on the hospital bed. She was scared.
There was no cure for her to recover.
Adam saw her in such despair, and wanted to soothe her, but he couldn't do anything. He felt useless. It was all his fault. He should've never let her out of the house, not without him.
He couldn't look at her anymore. It hurt too much. It wasn't fair. It was his fault she's like this.
"Adam? What were you thinking this time around. You seem... Worried.."
She said while looking at the ceiling. Her breathing was uneven. She had a bandage around her leg, and bruises. It was obvious she got attacked when Adam was gone.
He didn't want to hear that sentence.
"I'll be fine. I just need some rest."
He looked up to see her giving him a look. He knew what it meant, and why did he have to tell her. He hated that feeling.
It made him think of when they met. How he was able to save her life. Even though there was only one chance.
"Adam..."
"What?" he replied harshly.
"The doctors said there was no cure. The chances of survival were really low, so... There was nothing you could do."
His eyes started to burn and tears started falling from them. Lyne was right. He shouldn't try to change anything about fate. Fate was cruel and unfair.
"You shouldn't blame yourself for my death," she continued. "It's my own fault, after all."
If anyone else would have told that statement to someone, they'd get slapped. But she didn't. It was the truth, even if she doesn't acknowledge it herself.
Adam was speechless. He tried hard not to break down in front of her. She needed to be strong for now. She needs to heal properly.
"Adam..."
But she was getting weaker. He could see it. The wounds weren't healing as fast as they should.
"Adam-"
"Stop! Please, stop talking, okay! I can't take it!" His voice shook, and broke when he cried. The room became silent, except for their breathing. It was so quiet. He hated it.
"Adam, listen to me, okay? If I knew what will happen...I wouldn't have done it. I would've never left. I swear on my life. I love you. No matter what happens, I won't abandon you. I promise you."
Her tone softened when she said those last words. He felt bad. He deserved her sympathy. Not her hatred. Not her pain.
"Thank you. I'm sorry. I know you're trying your best. I hope you don't blame yourself for my death." He gave her a sad smile, which she returned. They embraced each other with tears flowing freely. Their bodies touching again. After an hour or more, he felt Lyne's grip loosen, and she fell unconscious. She finally lost her battle with death, and passed away peacefully in his arms. He started to cry harder, and held her cold body.
The day the funeral took place was also the night she died.
Adam didn't go. He stayed in his room, staring at the picture of them at his desk,
1 was them on a prom in high school . They were dating back then. They looked happy.
Adam had a lot of memories with Lyne. And yet, everything changed. Everything changed because of Lyne. He blamed himself for everything that happened. He was always by her side, supporting her. Yet, he caused her pain.
2 was their first date. They went to his favourite restaurant. She didn't talk. She was probably worried that he was going to snap. And he was. He snapped at her multiple times. He didn't mean to, but he was angry and hurt.
3 was the night before they graduated. He came late to pick her up. She was asleep already.Adam continued to stare at the picture, his tears rolling down his face. He felt weak.
Jonah saw his best friend condition and wanted to help him, but Adam refused.
"I don't want to burden you with me."
They were having lunch together. Jonah sat next to him, giving him support and care. Adam appreciated it very much.
Jonah had been Adam's best friend since freshman year, ever since they met and became friends. He couldn't stop thinking about Lyne, he wouldn't move on.
Everything seemed perfect, until Lyne got sick and died.
"Adam... Are you still upset about her death?" Jonah looked concerned, "I'm sorry for bringing it up. I know it hurts."
Adam nodded his head and gave Jonah a small smile.
"I remember what Lyne promised to me. She wants to tell you something she never told you. Do you want me to read it out loud?"
Adam sighed and nodded once again. He knew it would be difficult to hear it from Jonah, but it couldn't stay any longer. He needed to know if she is still alive.
Jonah pulled a letter out of his backpack, and handed it over to him.
