The temple lay in ruins, a shadow of its former self. Once a sanctuary of wisdom and strength, it now stood as a scarred monument to betrayal and loss. Broken pillars jutted from the cracked ground, their ancient inscriptions marred by the chaos of battle. Dust hung in the air like a mournful shroud, and the distant cries of mourning echoed faintly through the stillness.

Benji stood amidst the wreckage, his chest heaving with each breath, the violet energy that had once surged with destructive fury now flickering weakly around him. His eyes, bloodshot and weary, were fixed on the broken form of Tao, who lay slumped against a shattered pillar. The sight of him was a painful reminder of the fractured trust and the devastation that had unfolded.

Tao's face was battered and bruised, his once-pristine clothes now tattered and stained with blood. He struggled to sit up, the pain evident in every movement. His eyes, once cold and calculating, were now filled with an honest regret that cut deeper than any physical wound.

"Benji," Tao croaked, his voice barely audible over the settling dust. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I know I've done irreparable damage. But before you end this... let me explain. Please."

Benji's hands clenched into fists, the energy crackling around him in a subdued but menacing display. His heart was still pounding, the adrenaline of battle slowly ebbing away, leaving a hollow ache in its place. His gaze was a storm of anger and confusion as he took a hesitant step closer to Tao.

"You think you can just show up and ask for forgiveness after everything?" Benji's voice was a raw, strained whisper. "You let them kill Sensei. You betrayed us all."

Tao's head dipped, the weight of his guilt evident in his posture. "I was trying to protect everyone," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I thought I could control the situation. I thought if I made a deal with them, we could come out of this with minimal losses. I didn't realize how far things would spiral."

Benji's expression hardened. "You were trying to protect us? By selling us out?"

"I didn't see it that way," Tao replied, his eyes pleading. "I thought I could save you all. I believed I was doing the right thing. But I was wrong. I was selfish. I see that now. And for that, I am deeply, profoundly sorry."

Benji's gaze remained fixed on Tao, his emotions a turbulent sea. The rage that had fueled his attack was now mingled with a deep sense of betrayal and sorrow. He stepped closer, his shadow falling over Tao. "And you think saying 'sorry' will make it all right? Will bring back Sensei? Will undo the destruction?"

Tao winced, but he met Benji's eyes with unwavering resolve. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I wouldn't blame you if you never wanted to see me again. I just needed you to know the truth. I needed you to know that my intentions, even if misguided, were never meant to cause this much harm."

Benji's breath came in ragged gasps, his mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. He reached out, grabbing Tao by the collar and pulling him up roughly. "You think you're entitled to a clean slate? To walk away from this scot-free?"

"No," Tao replied, his voice shaking. "I'm not asking for that. I'm asking for you to understand why I did what I did, even if it doesn't change the outcome."

Benji's grip tightened, his knuckles white. He was on the edge, his body trembling with the effort to contain the fury that roared within him. He stared into Tao's eyes, searching for any hint of deceit, any sign that the apology was just another trick.

A flicker of emotion crossed Tao's face—fear, regret, and a desperate hope that Benji would somehow see past the betrayal. Benji's own rage was like a raging inferno, burning everything in its path, but something in Tao's eyes made him hesitate. It was the recognition of a shared humanity, even amidst the chaos.
