After coming from the office, Ajey put his bag on the dining table. Loosening the tie of his office uniform, he opened the water bottle on the table and drank water To quench his thirst.
At that moment, Chhaya peeked out from the kitchen on hearing the noise, both of them locked eyes but neither said much to anyone in particular.
Ajey wiped his mouth after drinking the water and sat on the dining chair with a heavy sigh. He could feel an unusual ache in his head, and his body was warmer than usual. His vision blurred slightly as the fatigue from the day settled in. Chhaya, still watching him from the kitchen, noticed the change in his demeanor but remained quiet.
"Ajey!" Chaya called out his name, overcoming her hesitation as she thought it best to do so.
Ajey looked up at her hearing her voice, "Hanji?"
She then walked a couple of feet from the kitchen and stood in front of him, as if she was examining him with her own two eyes.
"Kuch kaam tha aapko?!" Ajey asked her in a very difficulty with pain in his throat.
"Aapki tabiyat theek haina?!!" She asked him with a concern evident in her face.
Ajey nodded, but he could still feel his vision getting blurry, the headache getting worse.
Ajey tried to put on a brave face as he nodded, but Chhaya wasn't convinced. His usually sharp and attentive eyes looked dull, and the slight tremor in his hands as he wiped his forehead didn't go unnoticed.
"Chhaya, main theek hoon... bas thoda tired hoon," Ajey tried to reassure her, though his voice had grown weaker.
Chhaya stepped closer, her worry deepening. She could see the sweat forming on his forehead despite the cool evening breeze filtering in through the windows. Without thinking twice, she reached out and placed the back of her hand on his forehead.
"Ajey, aapko bukhaar hai," she said, her voice firm yet laced with concern.
Ajey closed his eyes and leaned back against the chair, his body slumping slightly. "Nahi, bas zyada kaam tha aaj... thoda rest kar loonga, theek ho jaayega," he muttered, his words now slower and more strained.
But Chhaya wasn't convinced,She quickly runs towards the kitchen and Ajey has no clue why she did this.
Ajey and Chhaya had been married for just over six months, bound together through an arranged marriage set up by their families. They were two strangers who had been thrust into a life together, each still navigating the complexities of sharing a home and a life without the foundation of deep emotional connection. Their conversations rarely ventured beyond the necessities of daily life-what time dinner would be ready, or if the laundry had been done. There was an unspoken wall between them, built from the hesitations and awkwardness of two people who barely knew each other.
Despite their respectful exchanges, there was always a distance. Neither of them had found the courage to open up, and moments of silence often stretched between them, like now. They had not yet found the rhythm of companionship that comes with time and familiarity. Ajey was focused on his demanding job, while Chhaya kept herself busy with managing the household, both lost in their separate worlds under the same roof.
After a while, Ajey opened his eyes hearing the sound of anklets coming closer to him from the kitchen, again it was Chhaya, this time she was standing in front of him with a tray.
"Kya hai ye?!" Ajey asked her a bit annoyed and clueless now.
Chhaya handed him the glass on the tray without saying a word, then she turned back and walked towards the kitchen again.
