„Where the hell have you been?"
The tone of Arthurs voice could have been mistaken for suspiciousness, but underneath the rough words, I could sense some worry. No wonder, it was well past afternoon by now.
I had tried to avoid the bridge and attempted to get Smith trough the river. At first, the training paid off, but then he stopped halfway trough when the current got stronger and I decided not to push it to much. So we rode back up to the rails, waited for half an hour until the next train passed, then we crossed. And even though I rode as fast as possible, it couldn't make up for the fact that the sun had already crossed its highest point.
„I got lost.", I excused myself. „Smith ran so far, I really couldn't find my way back."
In that moment, tail-wagging Cat trotted past the outlaw, sauntered over to me and pressed against my leg while she looked up at me, asking for attention. I kneeled next to her, happy to see her again and glad to escape Arthurs irritated gaze. While I scratched her behind the ears, little Jack appeared next to us, fishing rod in hand.
„Abigail asked me to take him outta the camp for a while. Said you'd done this before, and it cheered him up quite well." Arthur glanced at the boy. „You wanna come?...Now that you're back."
I nodded. „Sure."
Smith was still tacked up, so I leaned against him and watched how Arthur greeted his mare with a friendly pat to her neck and saddled her with routined movements.
Arthur glanced up at me, then back at the boy. „Jack, you mind ridin' with (Y/n)?"
„That's okay.", the little boy replied.
He handed Arthur his fishing rod, then he waited for the older man to lift him up. It looked funny when he did, both hands wrapped around the little boys waist so he wouldn't drop him by accident. Like he was holding a cat. Jack was so tiny. I pulled him up and sat him down in front of me.
„Here, hold onto the horn. We don't want you fallin' off." I smiled.
„Okay."
Arthur had finally mounted Gin „Alright, let's go then."
I pressed my legs gently against Smiths belly. As if he was aware of our little guest, he walked carefully and trotted very slowly one we had left the trees behind.
„Where are we going?", Jack asked.
„Just down to the river near here.", Arthur replied and gestured in the vague direction of the river. „You shouldn't go too far from camp."
„Oh, okay."
Arthur tried to keep the conversation going. „You feeling better? I knew you was a little sick."
„Oh, I'm fine."
„You're a brave kid."
A smile found its way on Jacks face. „So, just like you."
„I don't know about brave. Ain't much of a kid no more. Though your mama might disagree. Her and a few other women I guess.", Arthur grumbled.
„What do you mean?"
„I'm just talking silly. It's been a tough few weeks up in that snow, wasn't it?"
„I liked the snow", Jack mumbled.
„Yes, but not like that."
After a while of silence, Jack asked: „When are we going back to the other camp?"
