The camp was quiet, but Poppypool's mind was anything but peaceful. She tossed and turned in her nest, unable to shake the gnawing guilt that kept her awake. The memory of Stormfern's final moments haunted her every breath. Her dreams had been restless for days, filled with flashes of her body lying cold and still, and the weight of her father's voice echoing in her ears.
Tonight, however, she felt a familiar tug– a force pulling her deeper into her dreams, one she knew all too well.
No, not again.
But it was too late. The shadows thickened around her, and she found herself pulled once more into the oppressive darkness of the Dark Forest. The familiar twisted trees loomed overhead, their branches reaching out like claws. The air felt colder here, heavier, as though it was suffocating her.
And then, from the shadows, he appeared– Rowantail.
His yellow eyes gleamed with satisfaction as he stepped closer, his dark fur blending with the eerie landscape around him. "You've done well, Poppy," he purred, his voice smoothe and oily, like a snake's whisper. "Stormfern is dead, and GlacierClan is weaker for it."
Poppypool's stomach twisted at his words, bile rising in her throat. "I didn't want to do it," she spat, her voice trembling. "I only did it because you– because you made me."
Rowantail let out a low chuckle, his tail flicking with amusement. "Don't fool yourself. You had a choice, and you chose to act. It was you who mixed the poison. It was you who delivered the fatal dose. But don't worry, Poppy, you'll find that it gets easier with time."
His words sent a chill down her spine. "Easier?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper. "How could any of this ever be easy?"
Rowantail's expression darkened, and he took a step closer, towering over her. "Because you are my daughter," he growled, his voice taking a sharper edge. "And we do what must be done to ensure power. You are part of something much bigger than yourself, Poppypool. GlacierClan is weak, and with every death, it grows weaker. The strong will survive, and you– my blood– will be among them."
Poppypool shook her head, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "No... I can't keep doing this. I won't. I already crossed the line."
Rowantail's eyes narrowed, his voice turning cold and menacing. "You think you can stop now? Do you think StarClan will forgive you after what you've done? You're already tainted, Poppypool. There's no going back. The only way forward is with me."
The realization hit her like a blow. Rowantail was right– she had crossed a line, and there was no erasing what she had done. Her paws were stained with blood, and no amount of regret or guilt could wash that away. But the idea of continuing down this path, of taking more lives, filled her with dread.
"I never wanted this," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I just wanted to help my Clan, to be a good medicine cat."
Rowantail's gaze softened, but it wasn't out of pity– it was condescension. "You still can, my daughter. But you must learn to see the bigger picture. What is one life when it serves the greater good? GlacierClan will fall, and when it does, you will be safe. You will be on the side that wins."
Poppypool felt trapped, suffocated by the weight of his words and the pressure of her own guilt. She hated him, but there was a dark part of her that feared he was right. She had gone too far. There was no turning back to the life she once knew. But there was still a sliver of her that wanted to fight back, to resist.
"What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Rowantail's eyes gleamed with satisfaction, as though this was the moment he had been waiting for. "I want you to finish what you started," he said simply. "There are still those in GlacierClan who stand in the way. Cats who would try to stop you, to protect Sparrowstar's reign. They must be dealt with."
