Life has never been fair to me.

It's as if it enjoys watching me suffer and laughing in my face.

Day after day I had to suffer with constant fear of my dad. Punching, kicking, screaming. He almost drowned me at one point.

Until finally, my mother and I were able to escape. We had a restraining order signed and that was that. He was sent to jail for years, and when he got out he wasn't able to be in a 50 miles radius of us.

In order to keep us safe, we had to change our names. I was Marie. Was. Now, I'm Ana. A new name, new identity, new start.

Or so we thought.

A year after we had been moved, my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors did everything they could but... there was no hope. A few days after her birthday she died in her sleep.

I know it was for the best. She was in pain and there was no way she could live with it. But why did she have to go so soon?

With no family, and no where else to go, my only option was to be moved with a foster family on the other side of the USA

New year, new family, new start. The past was in the past and there was no changing it. All I could do was hope for a better future, and maybe is wasn't going to be so bad. The past couldn't hurt me now, right?

Wrong.

"Look Ana, I know this is hard, but you need to trust me when I tell you that this couple will care for you. Trust me, okay?"

That's my new social worker, Lara Coops. She thinks that it's a good thing that I'm being moved from my state but what she doesn't understand is all my memories are back there of my mother. I may never get them back.

While looking out the window, we passed a sign reading:

WELCOME TO COPPINHAM

Weird name.

I've learnt to just stay quiet near Lara since I got off the plane. If I ever interrupt her, she'll go on a rant of how it's rude to speak when it's not my turn.

Like I'm not fucking 10.

"Plus, a new start might be good for you," wrong "and who knows, you might be happier here than you were there."

What is that supposed to mean?

Before I can ask, she abruptly stops the car. That must mean that we have arrived at my new home. I look out my passenger window and see a two story house.

Plants are coming down the side of it and it seems quite old, but not an ugly kind-of old. More like a beautiful type.

There's an arch way leading onto the porch painted in white, but it seems to be chipping from where I'm sat.

In front of the porch, standing with two big smiles on their faces and waving are a couple. They don't seem older than 50, and they seem nice enough.

Before I had chance to open the car door, it was slammed open by Lara. She stared at me before grabbing my arm and pulling me out the car. Once she let go. I wiped my hands rid of sweat on my trousers and followed her towards the couple.

Once I had reached them, my first reaction was to step away from the man and closer to the woman. An old habit I guess.

Lara elbowed me so I quickly introduced myself, "Hi, I'm Ana."

I didn't shake their hands. It was too soon.

I soon found out they were called Mary and Vince. Mary was a doctor at the local hospital and Vince was a chef.

Once we were all introduced, they began helping me unpack my suitcases from the car. I didn't have much, but it was enough for me.

Lara was soon gone after that. She really didn't care to come inside and check if these people were crazy.

That's a nice thought.

They brought me inside and showed me my room. The walls were a lilac colour and their was a double bed in the corner of the room with blue, clean sheets. A vanity table with a mirror and lights stood next to the bed and at the end of the room there was a wardrobe with draws.

It was cosy. I could get used to this. I opened the draws to the vanity table and saw some makeup; lipgloss, mascara, blush, just the normal things.

Mary must've seen me looking as she placed a hand on my shoulder. "We weren't sure what shade you were so we didn't get you any concealer, but I made sure you had the usual things."

Looking up at her, her usual smile was on her face. Vince was in my door way and was leaning on the door frame looking around the room at what I expected was his work. Even though I wasn't too fond of men, I  suspected maybe he was different. However time can only tell.

"Thank you. Both of you." I turned to face them and sat on my bed.

Mary sat down next to me and Vince slowly walked into the room.

"Mary and I know you've been through a lot Ana. Firstly with your dad and now your Mom? I promise that I am nothing like that man."

He walked further into the room. "I don't expect you to trust me straight away. Heck, it might take months, but I just want you to know that I am not here to hurt you, I am here to love you as my child if you would let me."

I nodded along with him and whispered a quiet thank you before they left me to unpack and settle in.

Like I said, life hadn't always been fair to me. However, maybe, possibly, somehow this could be my chance that life gives me to live properly.

New chance.

New life.

New start.
