Jay's mind raced as he sat back down, the heat from the room still clinging to his skin. He could feel the stares, especially hers, boring into him like knives. The music thumped in the background, but all he could hear was the echo of his heart pounding in his ears. The girl's eyes, dark and piercing, followed his every move. He tried to focus on the game, but the weight of her gaze made him feel exposed, as if she knew what had happened—or rather, what hadn't happened—between him and Sunghoon in that room.
Sunghoon sat across from him, cool and unreadable as always, though Jay couldn't help but notice the faint flush still lingering on his face. What had just happened? Or... what could have happened? The thought buzzed in the back of Jay's mind, making him shift uncomfortably in his seat.
-
"Alright, next round!"
-
Jake called out, snapping everyone back to attention. A few people mumbled about how intense things had gotten, glancing between Jay and Sunghoon.
-
"Let's keep it interesting,"
-
someone suggested, but Jay was barely listening. His focus was on the girl across the room. Her lips curled slightly, like she knew a secret he didn't. She leaned in toward one of her friends, whispering something, her eyes never leaving him.Jay could feel the walls closing in on him, the noise of the party getting louder, more suffocating. He needed air.
-
"I'm gonna step outside,"
-
Jay muttered, more to himself than anyone in particular, as he stood up abruptly. He walked out of the crowded room and into the backyard, the cool night air hitting him like a splash of cold water. The stars were scattered across the sky, offering a brief escape from the suffocating atmosphere inside. Jay leaned against the railing, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.
-
"Hey."
-
Jay's heart skipped a beat as he turned around. It was Sunghoon. He had followed him out, his expression still unreadable, but there was something softer in his eyes this time, something less guarded.
-
"You okay?"
-
Sunghoon asked, his voice low but concerned,
Jay blinked, caught off guard by the question.
-
"Yeah... just needed some air."
-
They stood there in silence for a moment, the distant hum of the party fading into the background. Jay stole a glance at Sunghoon, wondering if he should say something—anything—about what had happened in that dark room. But the words stuck in his throat.
Sunghoon spoke first, his voice quieter now.
-
"About earlier..."
-Jay tensed, waiting for the rest of the sentence, but Sunghoon just sighed and ran a hand through his hair, looking almost as unsure as Jay felt.
-
"Forget it,"
-
Sunghoon muttered, stepping back.
-
"Let's just... go back inside."
-
But before Jay could respond, the girl from earlier appeared at the doorway, her arms crossed and a sharp smile on her face.
-
"Leaving already, Sunghoon? Jay?"
-
she asked, her voice dripping with false sweetness.Jay's stomach twisted as he glanced between her and Sunghoon, the tension rising again. Something told him this night was far from over.
