---The next few days passed in a tense blur. Jay did his best to avoid the girl, but it seemed like every time he turned a corner, there she was—watching, waiting, making sure he knew exactly where he stood. Sunghoon stayed quiet about the situation, acting like nothing was wrong, but Jay could see the cracks forming in his cool exterior. It was only a matter of time before something snapped.
By the end of the week, Jay had had enough. He found Sunghoon outside the school, leaning against a wall, scrolling through his phone. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the ground, and the air felt heavy with the promise of an impending storm.
"Hey," Jay said, walking up to him.
Sunghoon glanced up, surprised. "Hey. What's up?"
Jay took a deep breath, bracing himself. "We need to talk."
Sunghoon's expression shifted slightly, but he put his phone away and gave a nod. "Okay, let's talk."
Jay hesitated for a moment, not sure where to start, but then the words came rushing out. "You need to tell her to stop, Sunghoon. This has gone on long enough. She's been all over me, and it's getting worse. If you're not into her, you need to make that clear. She's not backing off, and I don't know how much longer I can deal with this."
Sunghoon's eyes darkened, and for the first time in days, Jay saw real frustration in his face. "I know," he muttered, running a hand through his hair. "I know she's been out of control. I just... I didn't want to make things messy. But I guess it's already messy, huh?"
"Yeah," Jay said, his voice tight. "It is."
Sunghoon sighed, glancing down the street. "Look, I'm sorry you got dragged into this. I never wanted you to deal with her shit."
"Then why haven't you said anything?" Jay asked, the frustration he'd been bottling up starting to spill over. "Why are you letting her walk all over you? Over us?"
Sunghoon didn't answer right away. He looked at Jay, his expression conflicted, like there was something he wanted to say but couldn't quite bring himself to.
"She's not just some girl from class," Sunghoon said finally, his voice low. "She's... complicated. We've known each other for years. She went through some stuff, and I was there for her when no one else was. I guess she got attached in ways I didn't expect."
Jay frowned, the pieces starting to fall into place. "So you feel guilty?"
Sunghoon didn't deny it. "Something like that."
Jay ran a hand through his hair, exasperated. "Sunghoon, you can't let guilt stop you from being honest. This isn't fair to me. Or to you."
"I know," Sunghoon said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know. I just... I don't want to hurt her."
Jay was about to respond when he heard footsteps approaching. He turned and saw her—walking straight toward them, her eyes locked on Sunghoon, completely ignoring Jay.
"Sunghoon," she called out, her voice sweet and casual, as if everything was fine. "I've been looking for you."
Sunghoon straightened, tension radiating from his posture. "We need to talk," he said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
She blinked, caught off guard. "What about?"
Sunghoon glanced at Jay, then back at her. "About us. This thing between us—it's not going to happen. I care about you, but not the way you think. And I can't keep pretending otherwise."
Her face froze, the smile slipping away as the words sank in. For a split second, Jay thought she might lash out, but then her expression changed—softening into something more vulnerable, more wounded.
"You... you don't mean that," she said quietly. "After everything we've been through, you're really just going to throw me away? For him?"
Jay felt his stomach drop as her gaze finally shifted to him, full of hurt and accusation.
Sunghoon didn't waver. "This isn't about Jay. It's about being honest with you. I've been leading you on, and I shouldn't have. I'm sorry."
She shook her head, taking a step back, her eyes filling with anger. "No. No, you don't get to do this. You don't get to decide how this ends."
Sunghoon stepped forward, his voice soft but firm. "I already have."
The silence that followed was suffocating. She stared at Sunghoon, her breathing quick and shallow, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. Then, without another word, she turned and walked away, her footsteps echoing down the empty street.
Jay let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. "Do you think she'll leave us alone now?"
Sunghoon looked after her, his expression unreadable. "I don't know," he admitted. "But at least now she knows the truth."
Jay nodded, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders, even though the situation still felt far from resolved. Sunghoon turned to him, his eyes softer now, and for the first time in days, there was no tension between them.
"Thanks for pushing me to do this," Sunghoon said, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I should've done it a long time ago."
Jay shrugged, trying to play it off, but he couldn't stop the small smile forming on his own face. "You're welcome."
For now, it seemed like the worst was over. But deep down, Jay knew that the fallout from this confrontation was only just beginning.
