Howard University (1987): Amina Smith
"Fuck" I moan out as Kamala pushes me up against my dorm room door. "You got the softest lips ever" she says and I press my lips against hers before whispering, "which ones?"I smile as she throws her head back with that gorgeous laugh of hers that shows perfectly white teeth as plump lips pull up into a smile. "You are so beautiful" I tell her and her smile softens as she looks down at me.
"Amina, I lo-" a knock on my door interrupts her and I jump in surprise. "You expecting someone?" She asks, backing up so I can gather myself. "Not that I know of" I say, turning to look out of the peephole.
I let out a groan at the sight, "oh fuck." "What is it?" Kamala asks in concern from being me. I look over my shoulder, "I am so sorry for this" I say before taking a deep breath and opening the door. "Mother. Father. What are you guys doing here?" I ask to my parents who are standing in my doorway stiffly.
"Amina...can we come in?" My mother asks. "Do you have to?" I ask and my father looks at me sternly making me sigh. I step back and let them into my room where Kamala is standing looking calm and perfectly put together.
It's awkward as we all stand in the room that feels like it is getting smaller and smaller with every second that passes. "Amina, are you going to introduce us to your friend?" My father asks. "Are you two going to tell me why you're here?" I ask and Kamala looks at me in surprise.
"Don't mind her she has always been a little sorely. I am Josephine Smith and this is Richard Smith, Amina's parents" my mother says as she shakes Kamala's hand. "Nice to meet you both. I'm Kamala Harris, her-" she looks over at me for what to say. "Girlfriend" I supply and my parents tense but they keep up a friendly front.
"Nice to meet you" my father says nicely. "We were just in town for a show and we were hoping you would join us for dinner? Of course your girlfriend can join us" my father says.
"Actually we were in the middle of-" "that's sounds perfect" Kamala says and I look at her in surprise. What is she doing? "Great! Grab coats, Amina it is cold outside and you know how you get with the cold..." my mother rambles as we gather our things and I want to scream at the direction my night went. I was supposed to be having sex right now...
"Ugh!" I groan, falling back on my bed. How can one dinner make me feel so exhausted? "That was...interesting" Kamala says as she sits down next to me. I hear the unasked questions in her tone and I sigh, moving over so she can lie down beside me.
When she settles against my side and I run my fingers through her soft hair in a motion that probably soothes me more than her.
"My parents and I always had a sort of strained relationship. It started when my younger brother died. I was twelve and he was ten, he just got really sick one day. My parents did everything for him, they out everything into him. And one day he was just gone. They were devastated as was I, but they changed. They shifted their devastation into perfection over everything in their life, me especially. I had to have the perfect grades, be in the perfect clubs, speak perfectly, walk perfectly, eat perfectly. You can imagine how hard that was for a twelve year old."
"I had to be the perfect daughter, and I was, until I turned sixteen and I met Lauren Baker, a transfer student from Florida and we hit it off immediately. We started dating months of knowing each other and she was my first everything. And then someone at school find out and told their parents and they told mine. My parents were livid, they planned out my whole future and being gay wasn't in it, according to them. Anyways they gave me an ultimatum, they knew how bad I wanted to go to law school, it's the only thing I truly wanted for myself, so they made me choose" I take a deep breath and pull her closer. Her warm scent calms me down immediately and I relax further into the bed.
