chapter one, the letter
(five days ago)
third person pov

THE SOFT GLOW OF the city's nightlife filtered through the tall windows, casting a muted shimmer over the luxurious penthouse. A woman lay stretched across her bed, her light, brandy-toned skin glowing in the low light. Her fingers lazily scrolled through her phone. In the other, a half-empty blood bag laid in hand, straw dangling past her lips.

A knock on the door broke the silence.

"Come in," she called, her voice soft, not bothering to look up from her phone.

The door creaked open, revealing a young woman—she was beautiful, with glowing copper skin and long locs. She was slow with her movements. She stepped inside, clutching an envelope in her hands.

"Ma'am, there's a letter for you," the woman said, her tone more serious than usual as she approached the bed.

The other woman finally glanced up, her sharp gaze flicking to her assistant's face before landing on the envelope.

"Chloe, how many times do I have to remind you?" she asked, her voice playful but with an edge. "You can call me Estelle."

Chloe smiled awkwardly, stepping closer to hand her the envelope. "Sorry, Estelle."

Estelle raised an eyebrow as she took the letter from Chloe's hands. It wasn't often that physical mail found its way to her.

Everything was so digital these days; anyone who knew her well enough to contact her used more modern methods.

Estelle's gaze lingered on the envelope, curiosity piqued. "Anything else?" she asked, her tone soft but direct.

Chloe shook her head, eager to leave. "No, that's all."

Estelle nodded, her attention already returning to the letter. "Alright, you can go. Thanks, Chloe."

With a quick nod, Chloe backed out of the room, closing the door softly behind her. Estelle sat up more fully now, placing the blood bag on her nightstand.

She slid her finger opening the envelope by breaking the seal. As she unfolded the letter, her eyes scanned the first few lines.

Her brow furrowed slightly as she read.

Dear Ms. De la Fosse,

I hope this letter finds you well. I understand this is an unusual way to contact you, but given I don't know any other way, this seemed best.

I've recently begun an interview with Louis de Pointe du Lac. He wants to share his story. We've tried this before, and you were briefly mentioned, but I felt there was more...

After continuing to finish the whole letter, Estelle's grip tightened slightly, a frown forming on her face. She was intrigued. But what was Louis doing? Why was he sharing their past now? Why did he care?

She had thought about Louis frequently, even if she didn't want to admit it. Ever since he took on his new.... companion, she'd cut ties.

She despised him, for what he had done, but Louis never wanted to hear the truth. They haven't spoken since. She loved Louis, but she had to do it from afar.

She looked down at the letter again, debating whether she should go. A part of her wanted the truth to be told—her truth. And maybe this was the only way to do that.

She had the time; after all, she was now on hiatus.
Without another thought, she stood up and began packing, calling out for Chloe.

"Chloe! Book us tickets to Dubai."
