Off the court

New life

I was walking to my new job as a media manager for the UConn women's basketball team. I didn't really know any of the players, so I was a little nervous. As I walked in, I saw the girls warming up for practice. When I closed the door, all eyes turned to me. Geno, the head coach, introduced me. "Girls, this is Mya. She is our new media manager, so treat her with respect," he said in a stern voice.

A girl with black hair spoke up. "Hi, my name is Jana." I turned around. "Oh, hi," I replied, putting my camera around my neck. Jana asked, "So, are you going to be coming to all our practices and games?"

"Yeah, I will be," I answered.

"Do you want to come to my dorm to meet the team?" Jana asked.

"Um, yeah, that's fine," I said, packing up my stuff and heading out with Jana. I drove to her dorm, took the elevator up, and knocked on the door. But it was not Jana who opened it; it was a blonde girl with beautiful blue eyes.

"Hi! My name is Paige. Are you Mya?"

"Oh, hi Paige! Yeah, I'm Mya," I replied as I walked into the dorm. Everyone stared at me.

"Hi, I'm Mya," I said to everyone. They all responded with a chorus of "hi" and introduced themselves.

"Okay, I'm ordering pizza since y'all don't want to cook," Kk announced. "Oh, hi Mya! I didn't see you there."

"Oh, hi Kk! It's okay." I looked back at Paige, those gorgeous blue eyes capturing my attention. When I glanced her way, she was already looking, so we made eye contact for twenty seconds. I looked away, feeling butterflies in my stomach. She was so beautiful.

**Paige's POV:** The new media manager is so beautiful and looks so nice. I didn't get to talk to her during practice because I didn't have time, but when I opened the door, I saw her pretty brown eyes and curly hair.

Nika nudged me. "Paige, you look like you're going to burn through that girl!" I snapped out of it. "Oh, hey Nika! Sorry, I was zoned out."

"You sure?" Nika asked, reading my body language.

"Yes, I'm sure," I replied firmly.

"You sure you don't like her or have a tiny crush?" Nika pressed.

"Yes, I'm sure," I said again, more sternly this time.

"Paige, don't get mad at me. It's fine if you have a crush on her; I don't care."

"Okay, maybe I have a tiny crush, but so what?"

"Mk, Paige."

Azzi suddenly screamed, "Pizza's here, big backs!" Everyone rushed into the kitchen. Nika came in first, telling Azzi, "I think Paige has a little crush on the new media manager."

Azzi replied, "Oh, I'm not surprised. She's fine as hell." Nika laughed as everyone else entered the kitchen. Nika hinted to Azzi to scoot over so Paige and Mya could sit next to each other.

As we all ate pizza, Kk whispered to Jana and Aubrey, "I think Paige has a crush on Mya. She won't stop looking at her."

Jana started laughing, and Paige glanced at them. Mya was on her phone, not paying attention.

"Mya, tell us about yourself," Jana prompted. I looked up because everyone was staring at me, and of course, Paige was looking the hardest.

"Oh, um, well, what do you want to know?"

Paige asked, "Do you have any favorite sports?"

I replied, "Oh, um, I always liked volleyball, but I'm starting to like basketball too."

Paige teased, "Well, basketball is way better!"

"Jokingly," I retorted, "but I like volleyball too."

"Volleyball is way better, honey!" I laughed.

"Mk, whatever you say, Mya," Paige said, rolling her eyes.

The whole team exchanged glances, and Nika whispered, "How much do y'all bet they get together before the season ends?" They all laughed.

Paige and I looked at them, confused. "What's funny?" I asked.

Nika replied, "Oh, nothing."

I shrugged. "Oh, okay. Well, I'm going to get going. It's starting to get late. I enjoyed meeting you guys. Thank you for having me. Bye!" I waved as I left.

"Paige," Azzi said, "you were staring the hell out of Mya. You like her, don't lie."

"Paige shrugged. "Well, she's not ugly. I think she's pretty as a friend, if that's what you're asking."

"Oh, okay, liar! You were literally eye-fucking her, but okay," Azzi teased.

"Whatever, I'm going to sleep," Paige replied, clearly flustered.
