Luke was a quiet boy. He only talked if he needed to. He didn't raise his hand in class, but ordered his own food. He was quiet when he talked, only speaking the necessary words. He spoke when he needed to, and people were okay with that. No one commented on his near-muteness. That was, until Michael came along.
-
"Hi!" The black-haired boy said as he sat down next to Luke. The blond looked up, surprised. Never the less, he waved slightly and went back to his lunch."What's your name?" Luke pointed to his name in his bagged lunch and and took another bite of his sandwich. Michael cocked his head, but took out his lunch.
"Oh boy! Leftover Mac&Cheese!" He cheered. "What do you have?" He inquired. Luke gestured to his food, letting Michael figure it out for himself. At this point, the older didn't bother trying to get more words out of Luke. They just ate the rest of their lunch in silence.
This is how it went for days on end. Michael would sit down, saying "Hi, Luke!" at the boy who would wave. Occasionally Michael would say things to Luke, not expecting an answer in word. And since he didn't expect Luke to answer audibly, Luke didn't. And he was happy with that. But one day, Luke felt the need to speak. It was after Michael asked "Do you have any siblings?" At which Luke held up two fingers. But Luke was tired of giving vague answers and for that matter only answering.
"Older- Ben and Jack." He said carefully, supplying only the important details. He figured their names would give away their gender. "You?" Luke asked simply, looking at Michael. The boy just stared at Luke.
"I thought you were mute!" Luke shook his head. "I talk when I need to." He's explained this before, and no one ever questioned him further. But Michael was different.
"Oh... are you selectively mute? Because I've heard of that before." Luke just shrugged. "What I said before. Selective muteness has to do with comfortability. I just don't say unnecessary things."
"Oh." Michael repeated. He started to ask another question, but second-guessed himself. He turned back to his food. A few minutes later, he chimed in again."
"So now that I know you can talk... What do you think of me?" He questioned with a smirk. A light pink colour dusted Luke's cheeks. He shook his head. "What?" Michael whined with a pout. "You said you don't talk when you don't have to. This friendship won't work if... Well I don't even know if it's a friendship!"
Everything was quiet for awhile, before Luke finally whispered "cute." At that exact moment, the bell rang, and Luke ran off to his next class.
His heart was beating hard in his chest, he didn't know where that came from. Did he really just call Michael cute?! The blond needed to think. He decided to skip next class- it was only history, he could afford to miss it.
Luke went into a bathroom and locked the door. He curled his legs into his chest and wrapped his arms around them. He buried his head into his knees and began to think.
Was Michael cute? Did he like Michael? What did Michael even think of this? Did he like him back? Luke's head started to pound at the variety of thoughts rattling his brain.
He began to think about the boy himself. He's been sitting with him for weeks, but they don't talk much. The blond thought about every lunch with the boy. He thought about how he ate, cute. He thought about how he would ask Luke questions, not expecting an answer, cute. He thought back to the time Michael spilt chocolate milk on his jeans, and how flustered he was, cute. Yes, Michael was definitely cute. But was it a crush? Did Luke have feelings for the black haired boy?
He figured if he thought he was cute, it was probably a crush. He sighed, not knowing if Michael felt the same way. Just then, he heard a knock at the door.
"Luke? After lunch I saw you come into here, are you okay?" Luke shrugged, then realised Michael couldn't see him. Instead of responding, he got up and walked over to the door.
Michael came to check if I was okay? Was the only thought coursing through his mind. When he opened the door and saw his worried face, the conclusion came to him that this wasn't just a small crush, it was kind of a huge one.
"Are you okay?" Michael asked again. Luke shrugged with a small smile, a blush coating his cheeks. He felt stupid for cutting class just to think about his feelings.
The blond watched as Michael made his way into the bathroom. Luke shut the door and kneeled down to the now seated boy. The latter cocked his head and looked at Luke.
"You know... I find you cute too." This caused the blonds face to heat up and blush profusely. The older carried on. "I mean, why else would I sit with you that first time? And all the times after that?" Luke blushed even more, if possible.
"Thank you." He whispered, and pulled the other into a hug. They stayed that way for a while, hugging on the bathroom floor, until Michael turned his head to kiss Luke's. He then got up and walked out, leaving Luke ginning madly.

Hello people. This is quuenlee and Becky sent this to me in the mail from her camp. She said I could post it or not but I thought all of your eyes needed to be blessed with this amazing story so here it is. She also told me to write this not from her:
Hey guys so I'm at camp, but I hope you like this! A little disclaimer- I have no clue if people like Luke in this story exist or if he still counts as selectively mute. I'm not educated in that field so plus don't get mad at me. ILY ALL SEE YOU IN 6 WEEKS ~ Rebecca xxo
