Jake stirred and awoke, the quiet of the house wrapping around him like a heavy blanket. He sat up, rubbing his eyes, but something felt different. The bed beside him felt... empty.

His heart quickened as he turned to where Josie had been lying, and when he found her side unoccupied, his eyes snapped wide open. Panic gripped him. Where was she? Was she okay? What had happened?

Jake had known Josie for 15 years, through every phase of her life—both as Josh and now as Josie. He knew how fragile she could be. Even as Josh, she had always preferred solitude, and it was rare for her to simply disappear. The nightmares had taken their toll, and he couldn't shake the worry that she might do something to harm herself.

He paused, shaking his head to dispel that dark line of thought. She could still be in the house, just wandering through the empty rooms. He had to check before jumping to conclusions.

Throwing off the covers, he heaved himself out of bed, the cool air biting against his skin. He moved through their small house, the floor creaking beneath his feet, calling out her name softly. Each empty room deepened his anxiety, amplifying the silence that felt almost oppressive.

Finally, in the living room, he spotted a slip of paper on the coffee table, signed with her name.

"Jake," it read, "I'm sorry if I scared you by leaving the house tonight, but don't worry about me. I'll be... okay. I'm going to Danielle's place. I need to finally do what you suggested five years ago. Danielle loved me, and I loved her, so I owe it to her to tell her the truth. - Josie"

As he read, his heartbeat slowed, replaced by a wave of relief mixed with pride. A smile crept onto his face. Who would have thought Josie would take this step on her own? He had suggested this very course of action countless times, but she had always hesitated. A day had turned into a week, a week into a year, and now five years had passed since the funeral—yet here she was, ready to face the truth.

"Well," Jake thought, warmth filling him, "she'll be okay. She's so much stronger than she gives herself credit for."

But as the thought lingered, he couldn't shake the slight worry that danced at the edges of his mind. What if Danielle didn't react the way Josie hoped? Still, he trusted Josie's courage. This was her moment, and he could only support her from a distance.
