"And th-that's what happened..." Josie whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm so sorry I lied to you. I'm so sorry for everything, Dani."

Hearing the old nickname usually triggered a wave of bittersweet memories, but now Danielle felt... numb. It was as if the ground had crumbled beneath her feet, her world cracking open as she tried to comprehend what Josie had just revealed.

"Wh- I mean... how?" Danielle stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, as if speaking too loudly would break the fragile moment between them. "C-can you prove it to me?"

"As if knowing you went by Dani while we were dating isn't proof enough?" Josie's voice was soft but sure. "You ran track in high school, a year before the funeral. And before that, we were in that performing arts class downtown. Remember? You tried to teach me to dance, but I tripped over your feet more times than I can count."

Danielle blinked, her breath hitching. Those memories—the ones no one else could possibly know—rushed back with such clarity, it left her dizzy. It was true. It had to be. Josie was Josh... or had always been Josie. The pieces of the puzzle were there, but her brain was struggling to put them together.

Transgender. Of course, Danielle knew about it. Her uncle had transitioned years ago, and she'd seen firsthand how it had given him a new lease on life. But... Josie? All this time? How long had she carried this weight alone?

Danielle's throat tightened as she slowly leaned forward on the couch, her movements tentative at first. Then, in one fluid motion, she wrapped her arms around Josie, pulling her close, feeling the shuddering breath Josie released against her chest. Five years. Five years of pretending. Five years of living a lie, telling everyone that Josh was dead.

And in a way, he was. But Josie—Josie had been alive all along, hiding behind that lie, shielding herself from the world's judgment.

Danielle held her tighter, her hands gripping the fabric of Josie's shirt as though she could squeeze away all the pain Josie had endured. For a moment, neither spoke. The weight of those five years settled between them, but Danielle knew her embrace could never fully undo it.

"I'm so sorry," Danielle whispered finally, her voice breaking. "I'm so sorry you had to carry this alone."

Josie didn't respond right away, but Danielle could feel her trembling. Maybe this hug wasn't enough. Maybe nothing would ever be enough to erase the hurt. But Danielle was prepared to stay, to hold her, to let Josie know that she was here. That she was loved. And that there was no need for regret tonight.

**One hour later**

The room was quiet, save for the steady ticking of the clock on Danielle's wall. Josie was laid across Danielle's lap, and the rising and falling of her chest was the only movement that could be seen.

"I- I didn't think that it would be this hard..." Josie whispered, pulling Danielle back to reality.

Josie's voice sounded raw and strained. She'd been crying on and off for the better part of an hour. Danielle followed her gaze up toward the ceiling, wondering what her best friend could be thinking.

"It's okay to feel overwhelmed, Josie." She said softly. "You did something really scary tonight. I understand how you feel."

"But what if I regret it tomorrow?" Josie asked, a hint of sadness creeping into her voice once more as she began to shake. "I've just.. been hiding for so long. What if I'm just not used to being open with people anymore?"

Danielle placed her hand on Josie's head. "You've been dealing with these fears for a long time on your own, Josie." She said, "you don't have to anymore. You don't have to know everything just yet. Hell, you don't even have to have anything figured out. Just know that everyone you love is here."

Josie's breathing evened out, though she was still shaking. Danielle began to stroke the girl's hair, hoping that it would help her calm down. She desperately wanted Josie to know that she still cared.

For the first time in five years, Danielle felt as if she had finally gained closure. As Josie's body began to still in her arms, falling into sleep, Danielle felt a wondrous feeling come over her. Finally, there was a healing in the lives of her and Josie, and they could breathe in the peace that would follow.
