𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐋𝐘𝐍𝐍 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐘 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐏𝐀𝐂𝐊 from where it rests beside the front door and slips it on over her arms, around the light blue sweater she was wearing today, along with her dark blue jeans, skinny brown belt, and black Converse.

Max shrugs her rusty brown colored backpack onto her shoulders beside Ashlynn, over her red sweater and light blue jeans as she adjusts her bright green Converse on her feet.

Billy leans against the yellow front door behind the two girls as Susan and Neil stand before them, smiling although one smile was genuine while the other was fake.

"Oh, I can't believe it!" Susan gushes excitedly. "Your first day at school! You kids just grow up so fast."

"It's not actually our first day at school." Max mutters, making Susan's smile falter. "We both went to school for two weeks this year in California."

"Well, Maxine, it's your first day of school at Hawkins Middle so it's a day to be excited." Neil smiles, his eyes still narrowed and cold.

Susan smiles back at the girls as she picks up a camera. "Oh! Let me take a picture!"

"A picture? Really, mom?" Max groans but Susan's already taken off the cap and lined it up with the girls by the door.

"Smile, girls!"

Ashlynn smiles tightly through closed lips while Max doesn't even bother and just glares at the camera.

Susan takes a few photos as the camera flashes, blinding the girls for a moment or two before she lowers it and smiles affectionately at her two daughters. "I just can't believe you two are off to middle school already. I can't wait to see you two grow up together."

Max shrugs, annoyed. "Can we go now?"

"Of course. Billy will take you now." Neil agrees, fixing his cold gaze on his son. "Right, Billy?"

"Right." He replies tensely, glaring at his father.

"Wonderful!" Susan trills excitedly, not noticing the tension this time. "Well then, I'll see you girls after school and then you'll have to promise to tell me all about it, okay? Oh, and you too, Billy. I'd love to hear about all of you kids' days."

Billy looks away as Ashlynn nods at her step-mother. "Okay, we promise."

"Yep." Max grumbles as Billy finally opens the door and leads the girls outside.

"Have a good day!" Susan calls after the three of them, waving ecstatically before Neil slams the door shut.

Billy unlocks the door of the blue Camaro and slides into the driver's seat as Ashlynn sits in the back and Max takes the passenger seat.
