Reina returned to her chambers, where Adira was pacing by the fireplace, her brow furrowed in concern. The moment Reina entered, Adira's eyes locked onto her, relief flickering across her face.
"Reina, what did Lady Eleanor want?" Adira asked, her voice tight with anxiety.
Reina placed the jewelry box on a small table, her expression unreadable. "She warned me," she said quietly, "about the people I've angered and the dangers ahead."
Adira's gaze shifted to the box. "What's that?"
"Nothing important. Just a gift she gave me," Reina replied, her tone evasive. She didn't want to burden Adira with the full weight of the truth-not yet. The less she knew, the safer she'd be. Or so Reina hoped.
Adira bit her lip, clearly not convinced. "She told you to be careful, and you're acting like everything's fine. This is getting dangerous, Reina. Are you sure we're not in over our heads?"
Reina sank into the chair by the fire, her mind still racing with everything Lady Eleanor had revealed. "Maybe we are. But if we don't push forward, if we don't try to change something, nothing will ever shift. This kingdom is rotting, Adira. I can't stand by and watch the same people cling to power and crush anyone who dares to challenge them."
Reina raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"
"Don't lose yourself in all of this. Power changes people, and I don't want to see you become one of them."
Adira sighed and sat beside her. "I'll stand by you, no matter what. But promise me one thing."Reina managed a faint smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. "I won't. But to survive this, we need to be smart. Smarter than them."
Adira nodded, though the concern in her gaze remained. "Then let's be smart. Together."
