Cillian felt a flutter of excitement as he made his way back to Eirini's house. Her text had come just as the morning sun began to filter through the trees, casting a warm glow over the streets of Nafplio. He couldn't shake the worry lingering in his mind, but the thought of surprising her with the necklace brightened his mood.
When he arrived, he found Eirini waiting by the window, her face lighting up at the sight of him. He stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him.
"I have a surprise for you," he said, his voice low and playful.
Eirini's eyes sparkled with curiosity as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the delicate necklace. The silver chain glinted in the light, and the small pendant dangled softly as he held it out to her.
"Cillian, it's beautiful!" she gasped, reaching for it.
"Just wait," he said, moving closer. "Let me put it on you."
He gently draped the necklace around her neck, his fingers brushing against her skin. Eirini shivered slightly at his touch, a smile breaking across her face. "It fits perfectly."
"Just like you," he murmured, caressing her shoulder with his fingertips. "Your skin is so soft."
Their eyes locked, and in that moment, the weight of his earlier conversation with Alyssa faded into the background. All that mattered was Eirini standing before him, radiant and full of life. He leaned in closer, feeling the warmth radiating from her body.
"You deserve to be spoiled," he whispered, his voice barely above a murmur. "You're incredible, Eirini."
She blushed, looking down at the necklace and then back up at him. "Thank you for this. It means a lot."
Cillian felt a surge of affection as he traced the necklace with his fingers. "I want you to remember me, always," he said softly.
In that quiet moment, he vowed to himself that he would do everything in his power to protect this connection they shared, even if the shadows of his past threatened to intrude.
Cillian took a deep breath, feeling the weight of what he needed to say next. "Eirini, there's something I have to tell you," he began, the warmth between them suddenly feeling heavy.
"What is it?" she asked, concern creeping into her voice.
"I've had some unfinished business at work," he explained, looking into her eyes. "I need to go back to Birmingham tomorrow. I have to book a flight."
Her expression shifted, confusion mingling with something deeper. "Wait, you're leaving? Just like that?"
"It's not what you think," he rushed to reassure her. "I don't want you to forget about me."
But the words felt hollow, as if they were echoes of something she didn't want to hear. "It sounds more like a goodbye," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"No, Eirini, it's not forever. I promise," he said, stepping closer, searching her eyes for understanding. "I'll be back. I just need to handle this."
She looked away, her heart sinking. "How can I believe that? You say you want me, yet you're leaving."
He reached for her hands, trying to convey his sincerity. "You mean so much to me. I want to figure things out—everything. Just give me time."
But Eirini's doubts lingered. The thought of him returning to Birmingham felt like a chasm opening between them. "I don't want to be a memory, Cillian."
"I don't want that either," he said urgently, feeling the tension between them. "Just trust me. We'll make this work."
Yet the uncertainty hung in the air, and Eirini couldn't shake the feeling that their time was slipping away. As Cillian stepped back to pull out his phone and check for flights, she felt a profound sadness settling over her, questioning whether their connection could truly withstand the distance.
Eirini crossed her arms, determination etched on her face. "I need to know the truth, Cillian. What's really going on?"
He hesitated, the tension rising between them. "It's just work," he replied, his tone measured. "You know how stressful my job can be."
"Stressful enough to leave without a real explanation?" she pressed, frustration bubbling up. "I want to understand. I can handle the truth, whatever it is."
Cillian sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's complicated, Eirini. There are things I can't share right now. Just trust me when I say I'm doing this for us. I need to sort some things out."
"But if we're going to be together, I can't be left in the dark," she insisted, her heart racing. "I deserve to know what's really happening."
He stepped closer, trying to convey his sincerity. "I promise, it's nothing to worry about. I just need a little time to deal with it. I want to focus on us when I'm back."
Eirini searched his eyes, looking for reassurance but finding only a mix of frustration and concern. "I want to believe you, but it's hard when you won't let me in."
"I know," he admitted softly, his gaze unwavering. "But please, just give me this. I'll explain everything when the time is right."
She felt a knot tightening in her stomach, caught between wanting to support him and the fear of what secrets lay beneath the surface. "Fine," she finally said, though her heart felt heavy. "But I won't forget this."
As he turned away to finalize his flight, Eirini couldn't shake the feeling that the distance between them had already begun to grow.
