The cold winter air of December came sooner than I expected. We had unusual weather in Mysteria as we often had very warm weather during the fall and the warmness wouldn't let up until the middle of December. This year, however, was different.
The temperature has dropped considerably these past few days, and we'd had a few snow flurries, leaving the ground covered in a blanket of white. Despite the odd weather, school resumed as unusual. For once, school wasn't my focus. With everything that had been going on lately, it was the least of my concerns.
Just last night, Cato had come to me with news. His cruel methods had finally paid off as the spy that was captured gave up what information he had. He had been instructed to monitor my daily activities here in River Valley and learn about everyone I was connected to. It was no secret to Legion who was in my circle of family and friends.
They needed to gather information on them to get to me. I wouldn't let anyone close to me get hurt and they knew that. Legion needed a way to get to me, which meant that getting to me would get to my parents. They were doing everything they could to ensure they got exactly what they wanted.
Although the spy had been detained, another would come to do what he had failed to do. Because of this, Cato and the rest of my guards had been on high alert. I'd been a lot more high-strung myself the past few days. Knowing that everyone close to me had become a target had set off my protective instincts.
Eliana and the boys worried about me, of course. I hadn't told them anything that had been going on and that was mostly because these affairs didn't concern humans. This isn't something I needed them to worry about. I couldn't avoid their constant questioning. I had brushed it off as nerves about our upcoming exams. It was partly true since I had been too distracted to focus on studying or pay attention in class for that matter. I had to rely on Eliana's notes to help me keep up with the material in class so that I wasn't completely lost.
I was closed off when I got home. I shut myself away in my room until dinner and returned right after. I would sneak out an hour later to go train with Cato. It offered a much-needed distraction from the chaotic thoughts in my head. Throwing myself into training and focusing on nothing but that for the few hours we trained allowed me to improve a lot more quickly. My goal was to get stronger to protect the people I cared about, and I was going to achieve that goal.
Neither of my parents bothered me while I was eating breakfast. I was too lost in my thoughts to even pay attention to anything they were saying. I finished up breakfast quicker than usual and prepared to head out for school.
The winter air was frigid, accompanied by a snow flurry. The already light blanket of snow was starting to accumulate even more on the ground. The force of the wind was strong, blowing snow into my eyes. I shoved my hands into the pockets of my black jeans and began trudging through the harsh winter weather.
Eliana had gotten a ride to school from her dad since he and her mom were both intent on keeping us apart as much as they could. Their newly adjusted work schedule made it possible for one of them to be able to pick her up from school and take her there in the mornings. It annoyed me that they went this far to keep her away from me, but I reveled in the fact that I was sneaking kisses with Eliana behind their backs.
I kept my gaze low as I walked to avoid being blinded by the snow. I watched my boots make prints in the snow, the sound of the soft crunch of the snow reaching my ears through the harsh winds. I adjusted my scarf tighter around my neck as I waited at the crosswalk. Though the cold didn't affect me, I made sure to dress somewhat appropriately for the winter. I brought less attention to myself when I acted human.
