The deep rumbling that came from the sky made me stop walking. I looked up, seeing ominous dark clouds overtaking the once clear blue sky. Another rumble was followed by a loud crack of lightning before the downpour began.
Great. Of all the days it could've rained, it had to be this one.
I quickly pulled the hood of my gray hoodie over my head and started to jog the rest of the way to school. I could just barely make out the sign that said, 'Welcome to River Valley High! Home of the valiant Knights!' It was more like welcome to hell. It was the same shitty high school that you saw in all the cheesy movies about teenagers. Lots of red bricks and plenty of glass windows. There was nothing special about it.
The rainfall was getting heavier by the second and I didn't want to spend the day in soaked clothes. I, and several other students, sprinted the last few feet into the safety of the building. Some of them had gotten soaked since they weren't prepared for the sudden rainy weather. The familiar blue lockers and white tile floors greeted me. The obnoxious squeaking of wet shoes traveled to my sensitive ears, making me grit my teeth in annoyance. Loud noises and overly potent scents made me loath having enhanced hearing and a strong sense of smell. It truly was a blessing and a curse.
I started bulldozing through groups of students to get to my locker, their complaints falling on deaf ears. I was already ready to leave this shithole. All these people annoyed me.
I reached my locker and input my combination into the lock. I pulled the handle, but the door didn't budge. I tried putting in the combination again and got the same result. I huffed angrily. Guess I would solve this my way. I got a firm grip on the locker handle and yanked it, tearing the door off its hinges.
I felt several pairs of eyes on me. I turned, curling my lips into a snarl, and letting a deep growl rumble through my chest. My audience doesn't take long to scurry away like little rodents being chased by a cat. I dropped the locker door on the floor and rummaged through my locker for the books I needed for my morning classes. I shoved them all inside my backpack and returned the locker door to its place. Someone would fix it later.
I started to head to my first period, which was English. I was about halfway there when I heard someone shout my name.
"Yo, Katerina!"
I mentally sighed. I'm seriously not in the mood to deal with that dumbass right now, even if he's one of my best friends.
Loud, squeaky footsteps approached me from behind, and an arm slung over my shoulders. The strong scent of expensive cologne assaulted my nose, making me wrinkle it in disgust.
My eye twitched. "You have five seconds to remove your arm before I remove it for you." The weight of the arm disappeared from my shoulders as he guffawed.
"Geez, who pissed in your Cheerios this morning?" the husky voice asked.
My eyes traveled over to my best friend, Hunter. He had that dumbass smirk on his face while his baby blues shined with mischief. "What the hell do you want, Hunter?" It only took me a second to figure out why he came to bug me. "This is about the chemistry homework, isn't it?"
His smirk grew, indicating that I was right. "Maybe. I just had a couple of questions about it is all."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Like what?"
"Did you do it?"
I chuckled humorlessly. "Of course. If you think I'm going to let you copy my homework again, you're sadly mistaken."
"Oh, come on, Kat. This'll be the last time. Promise."
"That's what you said last week and the week before that. Oh, and the week before that. I don't understand why you don't do your chemistry homework. You're good in chemistry."
