Saturday| November 5th, 2016| Eliana| 6:00 AM

Bright rays of light shined into my eyes and disturbed me from my sleep. I groaned and pulled my covers over my head to block out the light. It was futile since the covers were pulled from my body moments later. I peeled my eyes open to be met with my mom's scowling face.

"Mom? What are you doing in my room?" I asked groggily.

With the scowl still on her face she said, "Waking you up if that wasn't obvious. I need you to hurry up and get ready."

I grabbed my phone from the nightstand to check the time and silently cursed in my head. It was 6:00 AM. On a Saturday. Why would she wake me up this early?

"You're going to the office with your father today," she continued as if she read my mind. "He thought today would be a perfect day for you to shadow him."

I sat up in my bed and rubbed my eyes. "Why didn't either of you mention this yesterday? I have a lot of homework to do, and I made plans to hang out with my friends later."

"You can do your homework while you're at the office with your father. As for your plans, cancel them. You have more important things to do than to be hanging out with a bunch of rambunctious teenagers."

"But-"

"Eliana..." she said in a warning tone, and I knew that there was no point in me trying to argue with her.

"Fine. I'll cancel my plans," I mumbled. I was already shooting a text in the group chat I had with the boys and Katerina.

Satisfied, Mom left my room and let me know I needed to be ready within the next half hour. I huffed in annoyance and got out of bed. I decided to just go ahead and get ready so that I wouldn't have to face my mom's wraith for not obeying her.

I was dressed, had my teeth brushed, and hair done within fifteen minutes. It was starting to get cold outside, so I opted for a cream-colored sweater and a pair of dark blue jeans. I slipped on my tattered black and white Converse and an oversized black hoodie that I had stolen from Katerina. I double checked to make sure my backpack was packed with all the things I needed to do my homework. I tossed my sketchbook and iPad in my bag too just in case I got bored.

My stomach rumbled loudly, and I figured I should try to grab something for breakfast before I didn't have the chance to. I strapped my backpack to my back and left my room and headed downstairs. I reached the kitchen, and I noticed that Mom was absent and briefly wondered where she went. Dad was at his usual seat at the table typing away on his laptop with a cup of coffee next to him.

His eyes drifted up from his laptop to connect with mine. "Good morning. Did you sleep well?"

"Morning. I slept okay," I replied. Even though my dad was hard on me like my mom, I found him to be a lot more tolerable than her. He didn't get under my skin as much as she did.

"You have time to eat something quick before we leave. I need to print some things off in my office and then I'll be ready to go."

He downed the rest of his coffee before shutting his laptop. He placed his empty mug in the sink before grabbing his laptop and leaving the kitchen.

Since I didn't have time to have a proper breakfast, I just popped some pop tarts in the toaster and washed them down with some orange juice once I was done eating them. I ran back up to my room and grabbed my phone since I had stupidly left it on my bed.

My arrival back downstairs was perfectly timed since Dad looked like he was ready to go. I said a silent prayer in my head in hopes that today wouldn't be completely terrible.
