Chapter sixty one : Can you stand the Rain ?
Rain Moretti
The soft patter of raindrops against the yoga studio's roof created a calming effect as I closed my eyes, feeling the gentle stretch in my body as I moved into downward-facing dog position. Our instructor, Rachel, guided us through the final poses, her soothing voice a perfect accompaniment to the serene atmosphere.
"Breath in and out." I inhaled deeply, feeling the cool air fill my lungs, and exhaled slowly, letting go of any tension.
You're probably wondering when I started taking yoga classes. I had to convince Angelo to let me join, using the recent events as a reason. I told him I needed a way to cope and was even considering therapy. He was hesitant, but I persisted, explaining that the stress wasn't healthy for me or the baby. Eventually, he relented.
As the class came to an end, I rolled up my mat and joined the flow of five other women filing out of the studio. The rain had intensified, casting a misty veil over the sidewalk. I regretted not wearing more layers under my thin gym jacket.
I glanced around for my driver, but he was nowhere to be seen. I decided to wait for him at a diner nearby. I started walking, quickening my pace to escape the chilly weather. Not having an umbrella didn't help.
As I turned the corner, I collided with someone, causing them to stumble. Apologetic, I reached out to steady them. "Oh, I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
The person, was a young woman with piercing green eyes and had her blonde hair in a pony tail. She smiled wryly as she balanced the containers of food in her hands. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for catching me."
As our eyes met, a flicker of recognition sparked in hers. "You're Rain right? You're married into the Moretti family."
I nodded, intrigued. "That's me. Do I know you?" I asked suddenly feeling uncomfortable.
Through the drizzle, I could see woman's smile grow wider, and she took a step closer. "We've met a few times. I'm Sophia. I used to work with...Angelo rather for him."
"Well .. I-i don't think we've met each other. What sort of work did you do." I asked while taking in her physical structure.
She cleared her throat and looked down, "I used to works as part of the kitchen staff in the mansion. I'm certain that we've met each other a few times, well briefly before you left him."
My curiosity piqued, I asked, "What's your relationship with Angelo?"
Sophia's eyes glinted with a mischievous spark. "Well, let's just say we were once .....close."
A shiver ran down my spine as Sophia's words hung in the air, heavy with implication. I felt a growing sense of unease, my mind racing with questions.
"What are you talking about, Sophia?" I questioned her in a state of utter disbelief. I could feel the contents of this morning's breakfast swirl in my stomach.
Sophia's smile twisted, taking on a wicked edge. "Angelo and I...we had an affair. We couldn't get enough of each other. I mean you did leave him didn't you?"
"And after you left I was the one there for him."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. The rain around us seemed to grow louder, more intense, as Sophia's words cut through the air.
