Chapter sixty two: schemes
Rain Moretti
I found myself standing in a dark, deserted hallway . The only sound was the faint humming of a nursery rhyme, sung by a woman in the distance. As I walked closer, I saw the woman holding a little baby girl in her arms, swaying gently to the rhythm.
"Ring-a-ring o' roses,
A pocket full of posies.," she sang, her voice low and soothing. "Ashes! Ashes!"
But as the woman continued singing, the rhyme took a darker turn.
"We all fall down mommy's grave." she sang, her voice dripping with malice. "To keep the baby and daddy, from saying goodbye."
I felt a chill run down my spine as the woman's eyes suddenly looked up and locked onto mine. The baby in her arms began to wail, and the woman's singing grew louder, more frantic.
Suddenly, the sound of gunshots echoed through the alleyway, making my heart racing, and then the woman's face contorted into something viscous.
I tried to scream, but my voice was frozen in my throat. And that little girl's screams got louder and louder.
Until I jolted awake, my heart pounding in my chest. I lay in bed, gasping for breath, the nursery rhyme still echoing in my mind.
Luckily Angelo was nowhere in sight and as I glanced at the clock on the nightstand I got my answer. It was way past midday and I had slept through the morning.
Plus I was hungry.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed, trying to shake off the unsettling feeling from my dream. My body felt heavy, from the exhaustion of the past few days. Whether I liked to admit it or not, the stress was starting to take a toll on me.
I rubbed my eyes, and stood up, making my way to the bathroom.
As I began my morning routine, I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. The nursery rhyme still echoed in my mind, and I found myself wondering if it was just a coincidence or a repressed memory.
After washing my face and brushing my teeth, I returned to my bedroom to get dressed. As I was putting on my clothes, my phone buzzed in the drawer. I froze, my heart racing, as I realized it was the phone I had been hiding from Angelo.
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should answer it. But something compelled me to pick it up, to see who was on the other end. I glanced around the room, making sure I was alone, before answering the call.
"Hello?" I whispered, trying to keep my voice down.
"Rain it's me. Listen we've got everything in place, but we need a few more days to get all the documents together."
"In the next five days! I don't think I have five days..... Angelo is already starting to get suspicious as it is!"
"I know I know , but we can't rush this. We need to make sure everything is perfect or it could blow the whole thing."
"Perfect? You don't understand Aria, it doesn't need to be perfect. Angelo is watching me like a hawk. If he finds out... I don't have five days."
