Adriana Silverthorn strode down the halls of Mystic Falls High, her every step commanding attention, though not always the kind she wanted.
She could feel the stares, the whispers that never quite reached her ears, like a static hum. It wasn't new—being both noticed and overlooked had become second nature to her.
Despite the curious glances, no one ever truly approached. Not really. She was an enigma, someone people admired from a distance but never dared to get close to.
Her lips tugged into a small smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. If only they knew how exhausting it was to be seen but never really known.
Approaching her locker, she scanned the faces around her. Familiar, but none that made her feel any sense of belonging. Every conversation, every forced laugh with her so-called friends felt like a scene in a play where everyone had forgotten their lines, and she was just ad-libbing through life.
As much as she tried to fit in, it was like wearing shoes that never quite fit—always uncomfortable.
"Adri!" Jenna's voice broke through her thoughts, the high-pitched enthusiasm almost jarring.
"Hey, Jenna," Adriana responded, closing her locker with a quiet sigh.
She leaned against it, preparing herself for the inevitable onslaught of homecoming gossip.
"You coming with us? Homecoming's gonna be wild this year! I mean, you *have* to come," Jenna gushed, her excitement palpable.
She had that look in her eye—the one people always seemed to have around Adriana, as if dragging her into their plans would somehow make their night more glamorous.
"Yeah, maybe," Adriana replied, her tone noncommittal.
In truth, she didn't know if she wanted to go. Homecoming felt like another event where she'd be on display—pretty but untouchable. The thought left her feeling cold.
Jenna didn't seem to notice Adriana's reluctance, rattling off plans as if everything was already set in stone. It was always like this—everyone assuming she'd just go along, smile in the pictures, and fill the role they'd created for her.
But Adriana felt like an outsider even when she was surrounded by people.
The bell rang, a sharp reminder that she had other obligations besides playing along. She offered Jenna a quick wave and headed off to her first class.
As the day dragged on, every interaction felt hollow. Small talk bounced off her, never quite penetrating the armor she wore around her heart. She wanted something more—something real.
But where would she even find that?
After school, Adriana slipped into the comforting chaos of home. The Silverthorn house was filled with life, laughter, and sibling arguments.
Wendy, her little sister, was sprawled out on the living room floor doing homework while her younger brother, Robert, clambered onto her, a bundle of boundless energy.
"Adi! Help!" Robert laughed, trying to tackle her.
Adriana smiled, genuinely this time, pulling him into a playful hug. "Wanna join the homework club with Wendy and me?"
"Nooo," Robert groaned, wriggling out of her grasp.
"Your loss," Adriana teased, ruffling his hair before heading to help Wendy with her schoolwork.
Moments like these—when she was home, surrounded by family—were the only times she truly felt grounded.
She inhaled deeply, letting the warmth of the kitchen and the smell of dinner cooking calm her.
