When I heard the cop's voice, I wondered if Micah would feel even a little sad about my death. He should, right? Could twenty years of feelings just vanish so easily?
Micah's handsome face showed no trace of concern as he casually asked, "Just the wedding dress?"
"Yes, for now it's only the dress. But she might be in danger. We can't rule out suicide. We found..."
Before the cop could finish, Micah cut him off. "I don't know who reported this, but I know Ruby. She'd never kill herself. She's pulled stunts like this many times before. Don't waste your time playing along with her little rich girl games."
The cop were surprised. They'd just gotten married yesterday, and here he was, not showing an ounce of worry for his wife.
As the cop tried to say more, Micah hung up.
I wanted to laugh. How could I have thought Micah still cared about me?
Micah, I'm dead! The police called you. What makes you think I'm still playing some stupid game?
Zoey wrapped herself around Micah like a snake. "Micky, what if Ruby is really in danger?"
Micah frowned. "Yesterday on the phone, Ruby did sound weak, like she was calling for help."
"Maybe she's still mad that I tried on her wedding dress earlier. She probably threw it in the river out of spite. But we're the ones truly in love. I've held back my feelings and let her have you. What more does she want?"
"That dress was designed to my taste anyway. Is she really so petty that I can't try it on? Throwing away a million-dollar dress just like that! And getting the police involved – isn't she just trying to embarrass you?"
Micah's unease vanished, replaced by his usual look of disgust for me.
A week ago, I got a call to try on my wedding dress. But when I arrived, Zoey had beaten me to it. She was wearing my dress – even the color and size had been changed to suit her.
When I asked her to take it off, my family started yelling at me before I could even say much. "It's just a dress," they said. "Zoey's just trying it on, it won't hurt anything."
She stood there in my wedding dress, arm-in-arm with Micah in his tux. Anyone would've thought she was Mrs. Shark, not me.
---
Zoey fell into the river when she was five. I jumped in to save her but couldn't. I hit my head on a rock and passed out. When I came to, I learned that the Shark family's son had saved me, but my sister had disappeared.
That's how Micah and I first met. We grew up together, childhood sweethearts.
When Micah was eighteen, his dad remarried. Zoey came along with the new wife. Back then, Micah couldn't stand her.
Three years ago, at my engagement party, Zoey suddenly "recovered her memory" and claimed she was the long-lost daughter.
While everyone was celebrating, Zoey fell to her knees in front of me. Grabbing my dress, she cried, "Sister, why did you lure me out and push me into the river back then?"
I was stunned. I hadn't known she was my lost sister. I'd never mistreated her, as a sister or a sister-in-law.
Her words hit me like a hammer, leaving me reeling.
Zoey kept begging, "Sister, I'll be good from now on. I won't fight you for anything. Please don't hurt me again. I miss Mom and Dad and brother too. Please let me come home?"
Dad slapped me hard. "I can't believe you could be so evil at such a young age. Zoey was only five! How could you do that?"
I panicked and tried to explain: "It wasn't like that! I didn't push her, I didn't..."
"She's your sister. Why would she lie about something like this? Zoey, my poor baby, you've suffered so much all these years."
Mom hugged her, sobbing.
Yeah, she was my sister. So why was she doing this to me?
What should have been my engagement party turned into some ridiculous family reunion drama. And I was branded the evil sister – a label I could never shake off.
I tried to explain through my ruined makeup and hoarse voice, but no one would listen.
Micah's father, usually so kind, glanced at Micah and told him to take me to fix my makeup.
I could see the shame in his eyes.
I clung to Micah's hand desperately, trying to explain. He hugged me, gently patting my back. "I trust you. How could I not? You're the sweetest, kindest person in the world, Ruby."
How did the man who once stood so firmly by my side turn into this?
I stared at the two of them in bed, my heart full of sorrow.
Turns out, no matter how sad you are after you die, you can't cry with empty eye sockets.
Even though my heart was gone, it felt like a cold wind was blowing through my chest.
I tried to leave, but I couldn't get more than ten feet away from him.
I was forced to watch them get up. Zoey sat at my vanity wearing my new clothes.
She picked up an eyebrow pencil, all coy, asking Micah to do her makeup.
As if they were the real married couple.
Micah caught sight of our wedding photo and reined himself in. "Cut it out, Zoey. Didn't we agree things would go back to normal after last night?"
"Yea, I understand. I won't get between you and sister." Zoey lowered her head, looking hurt.
Micah took out his phone and called me. Still no answer.
If he'd asked the police to track my phone now, they might have found my body.
But he didn't. He just put his phone away with a scowl.
I heard him snort. "Ruby, I've really spoiled you rotten."
"Yeah, sis is so good at playing hard to get," Zoey chimed in. "Don't worry. She's probably back at home, ignoring your calls on purpose to make you worry."
Micah's face darkened. "We're supposed to pay respects to the elders today. Ruby wouldn't miss something this important. Let's go home. I want to see what kind of game she's playing!"
