Everyone was shocked by Lyle's words. He had been estranged from the family for years, living abroad due to issues with his mother. People knew he resented his father and hated his family, avoiding them whenever possible. As an illegitimate child, he was looked down on and feared for wanting to claim his share of the inheritance. But this time, Lyle returned, asking to take over the family business.
Micah's father glared at him, furious. "Take over? Who do you think you are? Our family doesn't need you."
Lyle shot back, "You don't get to decide that. From now on, I'll be living here." He turned to his father. "Father, what do you think?"
I always thought the old man saw Lyle as a disgrace, but when Lyle called him "father," I noticed the old man's eyes welling up. He didn't seem like a father who didn't love his son after all.
"Prepare a room for Lyle," the old man ordered, and the butler quickly obeyed, afraid Lyle might change his mind. Micah's father objected, "Father, this isn't right..."
"Shut up! He's your brother. What's wrong with that? Look at him thriving abroad without my help. Meanwhile, look at the mess your son Micah has made!"
The mention of Micah made the old man furious. "And what about those online rumors? They're calling Ruby a fraud and worse. And you let people insult your wife like that?"
"Grandpa, Ruby ran to Ioton without a word. I wanted to teach her a lesson."
"You've got nerve calling her reckless. If you hadn't bailed on the wedding, would she have gone to Ioton? Do you remember when our family's finances were a disaster? If not for Ruby begging her family to help, we wouldn't have survived."
The old man hit Micah a few more times. "You ungrateful brat! I should beat you to death."
"Dad, if you hurt him too badly, how will he go to Ioton and get her?" Micah's father begged. "Besides, Ruby cares about him. If she sees him hurt, she'll be devastated."
The old man threw the whip down. "Idiot. Go get my granddaughter-in-law back now!" He stormed out with Lyle, not even glancing at Micah.
"You've done well abroad. If you're interested in coming back, I wouldn't mind."
Lyle coldly replied, "We'll see."
In the now quiet living room, Bianca helped Zoey, checking if she was hurt. Micah sat there, looking miserable.
Micah's father helped him up, his voice full of concern. "My father was too harsh. Butler, call the family doctor right away."
"Yes, sir."
As Micah lay on the bed, bandaged up, I felt a growing sense of dread. They were out to destroy me. Maybe that's why I can't disappear, why I'm still here. If only someone would find my body and let me rest in peace. But Micah, when will you realize I'm already dead?
Micah's father was lecturing again. "Ruby is a good woman, completely devoted to you. Now that you're married, you need to stay away from Zoey, no matter how you feel."
Micah shot him a frustrated look. "Dad, why would you even think that about me and Zoey? She's just my stepsister!"
Micah's father wasn't fooled. "Look me in the eye and tell me you still care about Ruby. Every time Zoey calls, you drop everything to go to her. You even put your wedding aside."
"That's because Zoey's health is fragile. She could die at any moment."
"And how many times has that actually happened? You know better. It's always a false alarm, but you keep running to her. If you didn't care about her, would you abandon Ruby every time?"
It was obvious to anyone paying attention. Micah's face showed just how much it bothered him.
"So, you all think I care more about Zoey than Ruby?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Micah's father didn't want to drag the argument out. "You and Ruby have been together for years. I get it, you might be bored. But if you take care of your marriage and have a kid, you can make up for your mistakes."
He patted Micah's shoulder. "Bring Ruby back. A happy home is the foundation of everything. And don't forget, Lyle's back to claim his share. You know your grandpa favors Ruby. Are you trying to hand over the family to him? Think about it."
Micah nodded and quickly called his assistant.
"Book me a flight to Ioton tomorrow morning."
"Yes, Sir."
"And take down all the posts about Ruby."
The assistant hesitated. "If we take down Ruby's, Zoey's will have to go too."
Even his assistant had that bias, which made Micah snap. "Do you think Zoey's reputation is more important than my wife's?"
"No, sir, I didn't mean—" The assistant stammered, startled by Micah's anger. After all, Micah always took Zoey's side before.
"If it happens again, pack your things and leave."
Micah hung up, lost in thought. Was he really that bad to Ruby?
He tried calling her again, but her phone was still off. For a moment, guilt flashed across his face as he muttered, "So stubborn, she's nothing like Zoey."
Once, hearing that would've broken my heart. But after everything, I felt nothing. All I hoped for was that he'd find out the truth—that I was already dead.
The phone rang again. It was the assistant, cautious after the earlier reprimand. "Sir, the Ioton trip is ready, but the trending posts have already been taken down."
"Taken down? By who?"
"I asked around. It was someone from our family. The posts were wiped clean in record time, no trace left on any platform. Word is, it cost fifty million in PR fees. Besides the patriarch, who else could pull that off?"
Micah's heart sank. If it wasn't his grandfather, then there was only one other person it could be.
Could it really be him?
