"Mom? What should we do now?"

"We're running. We're running for our lives. Transform!"

And so I turn into a fox. I run out of the cave with my mother and run through the forest. We try not to trigger any traps and avoid the shots coming from the hunters.

"This way! I saw something!" we hear from the forest, but that doesn't make us slow down. We keep running over fallen tree trunks and through bushes. We keep hearing shots and seeing various traps laid out on the ground. Everything from bear traps to trip wires is included. We are not their first prey.

My mother always runs behind me so that in an emergency she will be the one who gets shot. She's trying to protect me, like she always has.

comes from behind me and I immediately stop to turn to my mother. She has stepped into a bear trap and is howling in pain. Her brown eyes light up as if she's trying to heal, but since she can't get her foot out, the healing is of no use.

I wink in her direction, transform back into a human like my mother, and try to open the bear trap with her. Just as it opens and she pulls her foot out, a voice comes from the side.

“You are surrounded,” the hunter smiles maliciously and pulls his gun out of us. I look around and sure enough all 7 hunters are around us. They're all pointing their weapons at us and just waiting for the command to shoot.

My mom and I exchange looks before turning back into foxes and running towards her. We don't stand a chance, but we won't go down without a fight. I run towards the huntress with a bow and arrow and dodge her arrows as best I can. As a fox, I am very agile, more agile than wolves or coyotes, but I still get hit in the shoulder by an arrow.

I ignore the pain and bite her leg as soon as I get to her. I literally pull on her leg so that she loses her balance. Just as she lands on the ground and drops her weapon, I'm shot with another arrow from the side. It lands on my waist. I quickly run up to the hunter, bite her in the throat, so that she ultimately bleeds out and dies on the ground and then goes to the rest of the hunters.

I briefly look at my mother, who has already killed two more hunters. I run towards the hunter who shot me and jump onto his chest. He also loses his balance and falls to the ground with the gun in his hand. As I fall, another shot is fired, but I ignore it. I start digging a hole in his stomach with my claws. I dig until I leave him to die too. I turn in circles, looking for my next victim, but no one is here anymore.

I strain my ears and try to hear sounds. Eventually I hear them deeper in the forest. I run after the sounds with my legs as fast as I can. My nose smells blood, a lot of blood. I chase the smell until I stop in shock.

Mother..

My mother's fox corpse lies next to a dead hunter. She has multiple gunshot wounds and an arrow in the chest. Shocked, I run over to her and even though I can't hear a pulse, I nudge her with my nose to wake her up.

I shake her, but there is no reaction. She is dead. Died at the hands of a hunter.
