The journey back to base was fraught with tension, the ship barely holding together after the violent implosion of the rift. Sparks flew from exposed wires, and the dim emergency lighting cast long, eerie shadows across the interior. The crew worked in near silence, focused on the immediate task of keeping their battered ship functional.
Jackson, hands gripping the controls, glanced at Evelyn. "The stabilizers are shot, and we're running on auxiliary power. It's going to be a rough ride home."
Evelyn nodded, her mind still churning over what had just happened. "Do what you can. We just need to make it back in one piece."
Lex was in the engineering bay, frantically trying to reroute power from failing systems. His face was pale with concentration as he worked to keep the ship from falling apart. "We're losing power to the aft thrusters. If I can't get them online, we're going to start drifting off-course."
Morgan, sitting in the co-pilot's seat, was uncharacteristically quiet. She stared at the flickering control panel, her mind replaying the events of the mission. They had come so close to being destroyed, and the realization was starting to weigh heavily on her.
"Don't worry, Lex," she finally said, trying to lighten the mood. "If we start drifting, I'll just jump out and push."
Lex chuckled despite the situation. "I'll hold you to that, Morgan. But for now, I'd prefer to keep all systems operational."
As they limped through space, Evelyn couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The mission had been successful, but there was a nagging sense that it had all been too easy. The entity they had faced was powerful—more powerful than anything they had encountered before. But it had let them escape, almost as if it was toying with them.
"Something's not right," Evelyn muttered, mostly to herself. "This isn't over. Not by a long shot."
Jackson glanced at her, concern in his eyes. "What do you mean? We closed the rift, didn't we?"
"Yes, but the entity behind it—it didn't really fight us," Evelyn replied, her brow furrowed. "It was like it was holding back. I think this was just the beginning."
The ship finally docked at their base, and the crew wasted no time disembarking. The base was a hive of activity, with other teams preparing for their own missions. The sense of urgency in the air was palpable.
Administrator Kane was waiting for them in the hangar, his expression grim. "Good work, Team 7. I've been briefed on your mission, and I'm glad to see you all made it back."
Evelyn nodded. "Barely. The rift was more powerful than anything we've seen before. And I think there's more to come."
Kane motioned for them to follow him to the briefing room. As they walked, Evelyn couldn't help but notice the tension in the air. The usually bustling base was quieter than usual, the operatives they passed moving with a sense of urgency and purpose.
Inside the briefing room, Kane activated a holographic display, showing a map of the galaxy with several points marked in red. "Since your mission, we've detected more rifts forming across multiple systems. The energy readings are off the charts. We believe the entity behind these rifts is growing stronger."
Lex studied the map, his eyes narrowing. "These locations... they're all near major energy nexuses. If these rifts open, the results could be catastrophic."
Kane nodded. "Exactly. We're dealing with a force that is far beyond anything we've encountered before. And it's clear that this entity is targeting specific locations for a reason."
Morgan crossed her arms, her usual bravado returning. "So what's the plan? We can't just sit around and wait for this thing to tear the galaxy apart."
Kane's expression darkened. "We've been developing a plan, but it's risky. We believe that the entity is using the rifts to gather energy, possibly to open a much larger gateway. If that happens, it could unleash unimaginable destruction. Our only option is to stop it before it can complete its plan."
