The Resolute drifted in the cold expanse of space, bruised and battered but still alive. Evelyn stared at the viewscreen, watching the distant Kallak ships regroup for another assault. The crystal-powered shield had saved them for now, but she knew the next wave might be the last. The crew's determination had carried them through the battle so far, but time was running out. And in the quiet moments between, doubt began to creep into Evelyn's thoughts.
Lex worked feverishly at the control console, recalibrating the energy from the crystals for another offensive strike. "The crystals need more time to recharge," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow.
"How much longer?" Evelyn asked, tension tightening her voice.
"Three minutes," Lex replied, his fingers still flying over the interface.
"Three minutes," Evelyn whispered under her breath. "That's a lifetime in this fight."
Morgan's voice crackled over the intercom from the weapons bay. "Captain, the Kallak ships are repositioning. It looks like they're going for a flanking maneuver."
Evelyn's stomach tightened. "They're adapting. They won't fall for the decoy again."
Jackson stood beside her, arms crossed, his brow furrowed. "What do we do, Ev? We can't take another hit like the last one."
Evelyn turned to her crew, weighing the impossible choices before them. "We hold them off as long as we can. Lex, keep that shield stable. Morgan, stay on the weapons. Jackson, get ready to run interference. We need to buy Lex those three minutes."
The crew scattered to their stations, tension thick in the air. But as they prepared for the next round, a chilling realization crept into Evelyn's mind. There was something off—something she had been overlooking. Kallak's pursuit was relentless, almost desperate. But why?
As Evelyn tried to piece together the puzzle, her thoughts were interrupted by a transmission from one of Kallak's ships. The familiar face of the Kallak commander filled the screen, his eyes burning with cold intensity.
"You have fought valiantly, Captain," the commander said, his voice calm and collected. "But your resistance is futile. Hand over the crystals, and this can end peacefully."
Evelyn clenched her fists. "You're lying. You'd destroy us the moment we surrendered."
The commander smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Perhaps. But the choice is still yours. Surrender the crystals, or be annihilated."
Evelyn's heart pounded in her chest. She knew he wasn't bluffing. But just as she opened her mouth to respond, another voice crackled through the intercom—a voice she never expected to hear again.
"Captain," it was the entity, its voice resonating through the ship, causing the lights to flicker. "You are not alone in this fight."
Evelyn froze. "What do you want?"
"I want what I have always wanted," the entity replied, its voice eerily calm. "To guide you. To help you understand the power you wield."
Evelyn's mind raced. The entity had been watching them all along, manipulating events from the shadows. But why now? Why reveal itself at this crucial moment?
"What do you know about the crystals?" Evelyn demanded, her voice laced with suspicion.
"The crystals are more than just weapons, Captain," the entity replied, its tone cryptic. "They are keys. And the path they unlock is one of immense power, but also great danger."
Evelyn's blood ran cold. The entity's words echoed in her mind—great danger. What had they uncovered?
Before she could press further, a sudden explosion rocked the ship, throwing Evelyn against the console. The Kallak ships had resumed their assault. "Shields holding at 60%!" Lex shouted, his voice strained.
