PATIENT SESSION EP0003
Wednesday, June 19, 1996, 4:00pm
The subject is Evelyn Pratt, a nine-year-old female of Irish American descent. The patient's biological mother and sole guardian, Marilyn Adams, sought my consultation following a police investigation involving her daughter.
Two sisters, group leaders of a well-reputed youth organization, were alleged to have been responsible for burning a camp cabin, resulting in the tragic injury of another young troop member. Allegations against Girl Scout leaders, Monica and Pam Borondi, proved false following an eight-month long inquest. The Borondi sister's relationship with the Girl Scout organization has been terminated. The case psychologist who conducted Evelyn's assessment, Dr. Geraldine Wersiev, has been unavailable for comment to date. There is insufficient evidence to lay charges.
To this day, Evelyn's role in the unfortunate accident remains unclear.

EVE: -you just do –there! You did it again! [rustling] [pause] Oh my God is that thing on? You, um, better not be recording me.
DOC: Your mother gave me permission to use it during our sessions together. Does it bother you?
EVE: [pause] I'm a minor. Turn it off.
DOC: I would prefer to keep it on.
EVE: [silence, 00:00:37]
DOC: I'll turn it off for now and speak with your mother about it when she gets here. We can talk about it all together. Would that make you more comfortable?
EVE: [no response]
DOC: [rustling] It's off—
EVE: Don't! Turn it back on! [giggles] I like that it's listening... [pause] Are you going to use it to memorize me?
DOC: What do you mean, "memorize you"?
EVE: [no response] [heavy breathing]
DOC: Do you want to be memorized?
EVE: Do you want to be memorized?
DOC: That's very good mimicry. You have a keen ear.
EVE: Oh. Um... that's nice. Mother doesn't call it that. Mimicry. I like that word. Tell me again what it means? Tell me again what it means? Tell me again what it means? Ha ha! [pause] [sniffs] Anyway, she says I shouldn't be so nosy and butt into other people's businass. [long pause] [whispers] Promise me you won't tell her that I told you this, but sh-she calls me unholy... [silence, 00:01:02] [sighs]
DOC: What does she say to you when she calls you unholy?
EVE: [high-pitched, nasal whine (mimics mother)] "EVELYN PRATT! Stop sticking your ungrateful little nose into other people's private business. It's unholy what you overhear!" [giggles]
DOC: That sounds to me like she's unhappy you're being exposed to subject matter she believes is too mature for your age. Not that you're unholy.
EVE: [giggles]
DOC: Do you understand the difference?
EVE: [no response]
DOC: Why do you think she's talking about you?
EVE: Because I'm so interesting and her life is so dull.
DOC: [pause] I think you're aware that's not what I meant.
EVE: I think you're—[mutters] [silence, 00:00:17] But no one cares I think. [sighs]
DOC: That's not true. It matters to me what you think. [pause] Why do you think your mother calls you unholy?
EVE: [silence, 00:00:34] I guess I notice it when she, um, says– looks, at me. Mother's such an easy woman [pause] to read... [voice lowers] I see cobwebs and lies she doesn't even know she's spinning. [pause] My dear mother's intentions are so shallow they're like words tattooed on her ocular epidermis– that's the Spanish term for eyelids, by the way. Gangsters and thugs tattoo each other's eyelids in Russia when they get caught and go to prison. [long pause] The stronger prisoners do it to the weaker ones so that the sissy's sins are liquor-clear... [whispers] just like yours...
DOC: Is sinning something you often think about?
EVE: [no response]
DOC: Do you think of me like a sissy criminal?
EVE: [no response]
DOC: What do you read my sins to be, Evelyn?
EVE: You want to memorize me.
