DOC: Why are you crying?
EVE: [no response]
DOC: [silence, 00:00:57] Are you feeling emotional because of what Marilyn's boyfriend said to her about you?
EVE: [sniffles] He didn't have to leave... [long pause] I didn't mean to make him so, mad... I-I like the sm-smell and taste of it... I thought he'd understand... [pause] Alcohol makes my head feel w-warm— hot. [long pause] And I don't take it often 'cause I don't want my brain to get, um, stunted... like those people you sh-showed me... [blows nose]
DOC: Hmm.
EVE: I thought guys liked it when— they're usually so... I guess I thought maybe he'd think I was funny, and then maybe he'd like me, and want to, I dunno... teach me things or show me how to do stuff... [silence, 00:01:43] [heavy breathing] It sucks having only Mother around. She's so ... um, estrogeny, and stupid, and dull, and a— [yawns] hypocriiite... [yawns] And all the... [sniffs] other kids... [silence, 00:04:21] [light snoring]

EVE: [coughs] I've been thinking a lot about what you told me.
DOC: I tell you a lot of things.
EVE: Tell me about it. Ha ha! [loud rustling] Seriously though, I mean it. I'm talking about what you told me, about, you know, behaving in ways that people understand so that they don't give me... trouble.
DOC: So that you don't get into trouble, I believe.
EVE: Sure. Whatever. So get this: I think this is what bothers me so much about Mother. I was thinking about what you said, and I think the same can be said for like, sexy relationships, and stuff –you won't tell Mother this, right? [pause] She's demented... and thinks I'm too young, for everything...
DOC: That's the deal. I don't disclose specific details of what we speak about to your mother or anyone else, so long as I can be sure you're not endangering anyone including yourself, and you can feel free from judgment and speak truthfully when you're with me.
EVE: Right. Good. [long pause] I like that... I like you. [long pause] Do you like me too?
DOC: I do.
EVE: Doctor Desousa! That's not appropriate... [pause] Ha ha! I'm just teasing. I'd never. You're way too gross, and way too um you know... [rustling]. So, it's just like how you said, when I act in ways a guy who I want understands, and really likes, he doesn't give me any trouble– it's actually more like, like, um... [silence, 00:01:05] [sniffs] Boys can be such pleasers... [giggles]
DOC: I can see how what you're suggesting may work, but, that doesn't address the value honesty brings to a relationship or interaction between two people. The most pleasurable and rewarding interactions are the ones where you can be yourself, exactly how you are, no lies or masks, and you're still appreciated... loved... treated like an equal. [pause] Does that make sense?
EVE: [scoffs] If no one gave a fuck life would be fucking grand wouldn't it! But that's not real. [silence, 00:00:29] I'm not fit for real... For love. I'll always be alone.
DOC: That's not true, Evelyn. Everyone's fit for love. Including you. The only difference is that you don't define or relate to feelings of 'love' the same way most other people do, but you still feel it, and have valid, meaningful emotions... [long pause] But the reality is, sometimes others have a hard time relating to you because you have a hard time relating to them. We've discussed this before. Trust in others is a two-way street, you can't expect to fully trust someone and understand their reactions until you can trust someone enough to let them understand yours.
EVE: Um, like with you and me? I can trust you, and be myself with you?
DOC: Exactly.
EVE: "Trust in others is a two-way street..." That's such a load of crap! You don't trust me. You're nothing like who you really are when you're with me! [pause] I have to call you Doctor. A title, a role... [sniffs] Whatever. [mimics Mother's voice] "There's too much of the devil in that girl for love." [silence, 00:00:57]
DOC: Did your mother say that to you?
EVE: [rustling] Not exactly in those words...
DOC: Your life is just getting started. You'll have plenty of chances to build honest partnerships and relationships founded on mutual trust with people you care about and admire. There are people out there who will 'get' you, and will love you. [long pause] My job, my title, my role— it's all to help make sure that happens. [rustling] And, I hate to say it, but you call me by my first name all the time.
EVE: It bothers you every time I do.
DOC: It doesn't bother me. [pause] You aren't alone now and you won't be in the future— and I genuinely believe that you'll have fulfilling romantic relationships, when you're old enough.
EVE: I wish I was invisible because then I could be myself.
DOC: Why can't you be yourself?
EVE: [scoffs] That's what all this therapy is about! Isn't it? Just one more dirty little secret... Give and take, give and take... [long pause] All I want to do is screw giving, and take-take-take... just like how you do... [silence, 00:01:12] What if lying all the time about who I am is being myself, Matthew? [long pause] Huh? What then?
DOC: What do you think?
EVE: Oh fuck off. Answer the fucking question, doc.
DOC: Everyone's outlets are unique.
EVE: [long pause] That's a really poopy thing to say... cryptic... [sniffs] But I wouldn't expect anyone, especially a professional fake like you, to say anything else. [sighs] I suppose the best thing I can do for myself is to always be honest with me. At the very least... [long pause] amiright, or amiright?
