The sun shone brightly the next day, illuminating the bustling streets of Barcelona as Berta and I strolled through a nearby café, laughter bubbling between us. The aftermath of the game still lingered in the air, but today felt different. There was a playful lightness to our conversation that lifted my spirits, even as the loss still weighed on my mind.
"Seriously, Isa," Berta teased, nudging me with her elbow as we settled into a cozy corner table, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting around us. "I can't believe you almost kissed Alejandro! I mean, how hot was that?"
I rolled my eyes, trying to suppress a smile, but the memories of our near-miss flashed through my mind like a film reel. "It wasn't like that. He just—he cornered me against the wall! I had to do something."
"Oh please, you were practically ready to melt into a puddle," she laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she leaned in closer. "Admit it! There's a part of you that likes the attention. You can't deny there's chemistry there!"
A warmth crept up my cheeks at the thought, and I bit my lip, trying to maintain my composure. "I don't know what you're talking about. He's infuriating!"
"Infuriatingly attractive," she shot back with a wink. "And it's clear he's into you. Did you see the way he looked at you? Like you were the only person in that stadium."
I felt my heart flutter at her words, but I quickly shook my head. "Stop it! I'm still annoyed that Barça won. And I definitely don't need a distraction like him right now."
"Right, because you'd rather stew in your annoyance than explore whatever that tension is between you two," Berta said, leaning forward with a teasing grin that could only mean trouble. "Come on, Isa! Life's too short to ignore a little chemistry. Besides, you might even enjoy it."
I sighed, torn between my frustration and the undeniable spark that had ignited between Alejandro and me. "You're impossible."
"But you love me for it!" she replied, her laughter infectious. "Just think about it: next time you see him, don't pretend he doesn't exist. Embrace the chaos! Who knows, you might end up with a hot footballer boyfriend."
I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought, even as a small part of me entertained the possibility. "Berta, you're going to get me in trouble."
"Good!" she exclaimed, raising her coffee cup in a mock toast. "Here's to trouble and heartbreak and all the drama that comes with it. I say, bring it on!"
"Okay, okay! I'll think about it," I replied, raising my own cup in defeat. "But no promises."
As we finished our coffees, the conversation drifted toward lighter topics, but I couldn't shake the feeling that Berta was onto something. Maybe there was more to my annoyance with Alejandro than I was willing to admit. The thought lingered, mingling with the memories of our almost-kiss, and I found myself wondering what would happen next.
A few moments later, Berta's phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen. "Oh, it's Fermín! He's asking if I want to meet him for lunch." Her eyes lit up with excitement. "Do you mind if I ditch you for a bit?"
"Go! I can entertain myself," I said, waving her off. "Besides, I have some things to think about."
"Fine, but don't think too hard about Alejandro. Just let it happen," she winked before rushing out, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
As I watched her leave, I couldn't help but reflect on everything that had happened between Alejandro and me. The near-kiss, the tension, the way my heart raced when he was near—it was all too much to ignore. I took a deep breath, trying to sort through the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me.
But no matter how much I tried to rationalize it, a part of me couldn't help but feel drawn to him. As I stared out of the café window at the vibrant Barcelona streets, I realized that I was standing on the precipice of something new and exciting, and I wasn't sure I could resist for much longer.
