As we danced, the atmosphere shifted. The world outside the club faded, leaving just Alejandro and me in our own bubble. His hands rested gently on my waist, and I could feel the heat radiating from him, sparking something deep inside me. My heart raced, and I was acutely aware of how close we were, our faces inches apart.
"Why do you keep avoiding me?" Alejandro asked, his voice barely above a whisper as we moved in sync. The vulnerability in his gaze sent a thrill through me.
"I'm not avoiding you," I replied, my voice steady even as my pulse quickened. "Things are just... complicated."
"Complicated how?" he pressed, leaning in closer. "Because it feels like there's something between us, and I can't ignore it."
I swallowed hard, torn between wanting to confess everything and fearing the potential fallout. "It's just... I'm not sure if I can handle it," I admitted, my heart racing at the thought of being vulnerable with him.
"Handle what?" he asked, his expression earnest. "The feelings? The connection? You're not the only one feeling this, Isa."
Before I could respond, a loud voice broke through the moment, shattering the fragile bubble we'd created. "Hey, Ale! There you are!"
We both turned to see Lamine pushing through the crowd, a wide grin on his face. My heart sank as I realized our moment had been interrupted.
"Lamine!" Alejandro exclaimed, stepping back as the energy shifted. "What's up, man?"
I took a step back as well, feeling the heat from our close moment dissipate. The tension that had hung between us moments before was replaced by the typical camaraderie of friends.
"Just wanted to see if you wanted to join us for a game of pool!" Lamine said, oblivious to the charged atmosphere.
"Sure, I'll be there in a sec," Alejandro replied, glancing back at me with an expression that hinted at unfinished business. "You coming?"
I hesitated, wanting to keep the momentum of our conversation going, but the moment felt lost. "I think I'll stay here for a bit," I said, forcing a smile. "Enjoy your game."
"Alright, you have fun too!" he called over his shoulder as he walked away with Lamine.
As they disappeared into the crowd, I felt a mix of frustration and longing. We had been so close to something real, something I couldn't quite articulate. And yet, it slipped away like sand through my fingers.
Berta joined me a moment later, her expression knowing. "What was that about?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"We were just talking," I said, trying to play it cool.
"Just talking?" she teased. "It looked like more than that to me."
I rolled my eyes but couldn't suppress the smile creeping onto my face. "It was... intense."
"Good intense or bad intense?" she probed, raising an eyebrow.
"Both, I guess," I admitted, feeling the weight of my emotions. "I don't know where this is going, Berta. It's confusing."
She studied me, her expression shifting to one of understanding. "Isa, it's okay to feel confused. You're navigating a lot right now. But it sounds like there's something worth exploring with Alejandro. Don't let fear hold you back."
"I know, but it feels risky," I confessed, biting my lip. "What if we get too close and it ruins everything? I don't want to lose him as a friend."
"Or gain something more?" Berta added gently. "Look at me and Fermín. We started as friends too. Sometimes the best relationships grow from the strongest foundations."
I sighed, glancing back toward where Alejandro had disappeared. "It's just... everything feels so intense between us. One moment we're joking, and the next, it's like there's this huge weight in the air. It makes my head spin."
"Then maybe you need to lean into that intensity instead of shying away from it," Berta suggested, her tone encouraging. "Talk to him. Be honest about how you feel."
Before I could respond, the DJ switched to a more upbeat song, and the energy in the club shifted once again. Couples surged onto the dance floor, laughing and moving to the rhythm. Berta grabbed my hand, pulling me back into the fray.
"Come on! Dance it out! Let's have some fun!" she exclaimed, her excitement contagious.
We swayed and spun, losing ourselves in the music. I tried to push aside the whirlwind of thoughts about Alejandro, focusing instead on the moment. As the beat thumped in my chest, I felt lighter, freer. For a fleeting moment, the weight of my feelings dissolved into the night.
As we danced, I caught glimpses of Alejandro and Lamine across the room. Alejandro was leaning against the bar, laughing with his friends, but his eyes kept drifting toward me. It was unsettling yet thrilling to realize he was still watching. Each time our eyes met, a jolt of energy coursed through me, igniting the tension that simmered beneath the surface.
"Are you going to keep staring at him, or are you going to make a move?" Berta teased, nudging me with her elbow.
"I'm not staring!" I protested, my cheeks flushing. "Okay, maybe I am a little..."
"Just admit it—you like him!" she said, beaming. "And guess what? He likes you too. You both just need to get out of your heads and into the moment."
"Easier said than done," I muttered, feeling the familiar mix of excitement and dread. But deep down, I knew Berta was right. The pull between Alejandro and me was undeniable, and I couldn't keep running from it forever.
