Chapter 1 - Quarantine Zone

I won't bother writing the prologue as this doesn't include Ashley at all, but the story begins where we find Sarah sleeping on the sofa when her Joel comes home. She wakes up and gives him a birthday present and falls asleep again not long after. She wakes to her Uncle Tommy phoning her asking where her Joel is. Worried and concerned, she searches the house for her father, and finds him rushing into his study, frantically putting his gun together. After quizzing him on what's going on, Sarah soon gets her answer when the infected next door neighbor crashes through the door, attempting harm on the two. Joel shoots him down, traumatizing his daughter. His brother soon arrives and the family attempt to make their way out of the town. Instead they end up crashing into another car and Joel has to carry his daughter through the town to the bridge. A military man shoots down some infected chasing the duo and is then ordered to eliminate any civilians on the outside of town and so he shoots at shoots at them both, sending them both down the hillside. Tommy shoots the military man as he is prepared to shoot Joel. Hearing her in pain, Joel hurries over to Sarah, having discovered she has been shot. Try as he might, he isn't able to save her, before she passes away in his arms.

Chapter 1 – The Quarantine Zone

Spring 2033

"The number of confirmed deaths as passed two hundred. The governor has called a state of emergency..."

"There were hundreds and hundreds of bodies lining the streets..."

"Panic spread worldwide after a leaked report from the World Health Organization showed that the latest vaccination tests have failed."

"..with the bureaucrats out of power, we can finally the necessary steps to..."

"Los Angeles is now the latest city to be placed under martial law. All residents are required to report their designated quarantine--."

"Riots have continued for a third consecutive day and winter rations are at an all-time low."

"A group calling themselves the Fireflies have claimed responsibility for both attacks."

"Their public charter calls for the return of all branches of government."

"Demonstrations broke out following the execution of six more alleged Fireflies."

"You can still rise with us. Remember, when you're lost in the darkness...look for the light. Believe in the Fireflies."

Knocking on our door, jerks us both from our slumber. I sigh, crawling out of bed, and heading into the front room, and heading to the door. Joel jumps, sitting upright. He probably had another nightmare – he keeps having them lately.

The knocking continues and I hurry, grasping my red jacket and throwing it over my body, "I'm coming!" I call.

I open the door, hearing Joel moving sluggishly behind me. On the other side is a young woman with brown hair and a young face. She wears a sleeveless magenta shirt with a black shirt beneath, which is tucked into her dirty blue jeans, which are also tucked into her high top shoes. A backpack hangs from her shoulders and she still wears the hairband I gave her one time. I initially gave it to her as a makeshift bandage for her leg, but apparently after washing it, she began to use it as a hairband, which sits above her half ponytail.

I stand aside, smiling slightly, "morning, Aunt Tess."

"Morning, kid," she smiles and nods to Joel, heading towards the island in our small apartment, "how was your morning?" She picks up a bottle of alcohol and pours herself a drink, "want one?"

"No, I don't...want one," Joel leans against the table, lowering his head slightly.

I fold my arms and scuff my boot off the wooden floor, leaning against the radiator by the window.
