Mask

A mask can be happy,

It can show someone cares,

It can even seem a bit sappy,

But it can also hide a lot of glares.

No one ever said a mask was defined,

It could even be sad,

Or just less refined.

To wear a mask means to put up a front,

To hide behind it and not let people in.

The one you show your true face to may not like what they see,

But nothing has ever said that it's the only reaction they'll get.

The person under the mask may like tea,

But if they spill it, then they might start to fret.

Hiding your true self could mean many things,

From putting on an act so appease someone,

To even protect their heartstrings,

Or it could even be because of something they never won.

People may wear a mask for different reasons,

To hide pain,

To avoid suffering,

Or even just to escape fate.

Not all reasons are good though,

As someone may wear it to trick someone,

To play with their mind and kneed it like dough,

And whilst one hand holds freedom the other could hold a gun.

Mask wearers are not all bad,

So if someone is then never assume the worst,

Just make sure to be their comrade,

Even if it sometimes feels cursed.

All different reasons come from different places,

So no 2 reasons or situations are the same,

So when learning about why they wear it make sure to cover all bases,

And don't stop even if the reason is a little lame.

It may not mean much to you,

But to them it could mean a lot,

Seeing the new side may change your view,

But never add to the already stirred pot.

A mask can be broken,

So the person underneath may finally see the light,

They could go from loud to soft-spoken,

Or even quiet to knowing how to win a fight.

Not all things are as clear as you think,

But that doesn't mean you don't try to polish it.

If the mask finally falls,

Don't let yourself become the reason it goes back on,

Be their reason to keep down their walls,

And make sure their mask remains gone.
