For over a century, I have lived in secret; hiding in the shadows, alone in the world. Until now. I am a vampire. And this is my story. [Stefan-voice over]

In the dark night of Mystic Falls, Darren and Brooke were driving in their car through the woods, unaware of the creatures that had arrived in this small town."An hour's drive to hear that crap. You know, it wasn't even a band. A guy with a guitar. An hour each way."Darren said annoyed.
"He wasn't that bad." Defended Brooke.
"He sounded like James Blunt." Darren snorted.
"What's wrong with that?" Brooke asked offended.
"We already have a James Blunt. One's all we need." Darren said exasperatedly.
"So why did you come?" Brooke asked a little angry.
"Because I love you." Darren said looking at Brooke like she was his whole world.
"Nicely done. What's with all the fog?" Brooke exclaimed with a blush she couldn't hide.
"It'll clear in a second." Darren said nonchalantly.
"Watch out!"Brooke screamed.
Just at this moment, they ran over a man.
"Are you okay?" Darren asked worriedly.
"We just hit someone! Oh my god!" Brooke panicked.
"Call for help." Darren instructed Brooke and got out of the car.
He approaches the man that they had apparently run over.
"Please be alive! Oh, my god." Darren says shakily.
The man wakes up and bites him in the neck.
"There's no signal! Darren! Darren?" Brooke screamed.
Brooke tries running but gets dragged up into the sky.

I shouldn't have come home. I know the risk. But I had no choice. I have to know them. [Stefan - Voice over]

Dear diary, today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. My smile will say "I'm fine, thank you." "Yes, I feel much better." I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh, be someone new. It's the only way I'll make it through. [Elena - Voice over]
Closing her diary, Elena moved on to one of the most difficult task of her life, being waking her younger sister Evelyn Gilbert, who was a nightmare when someone woke her up.
Elena tiptoed through the dimly lit hallway, her footsteps light as she approaches her sister's room. It was way too early, but she had to wake her for school, and that was a task that not even the bravest dared to attempt.
She tried knocking. Once. Twice.
No answer.
Rolling her eyes, she opened the door just a crack. Evelyn was sprawled across her bed, cocooned in blankets like a stubborn burrito. Her hair was a wild mess, a pretty one though. Elena had always been a little envious of how Evelyn was naturally like a Greek goddess without even trying.
