When we got home, I was nervous, so I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Shortly later, my mom opened it, surprised to see Miss Agatha behind me.
Once inside, Miss Agatha explained everything while I sat on the couch, shaking uncontrollably.
There was an awkward silence between us. I expected my mom to scold me, but instead, she burst into tears.
"Alicia, why did you have to add more pain to my life? After everything I've been through... Is it my fault that I didn't give you everything you needed?" she sobbed.
"My dad left us when you were only six years old. I begged him to stay," she continued, lost in thought.
Flashback:
It was raining heavily that day. The clouds were dull, and no one wanted to venture out. Little Alicia was busy playing in her room.
"Alicia, breakfast is ready! Come to the dining table!" her mom called from the dining room.
"Give me a few minutes, Mom. My baby needs a bath; she's so dirty," Alicia replied.
"Okay, fine. You have five minutes to bathe her," her mom said, heading upstairs.
"Honey, breakfast is ready," Miss Maxwell called, knocking on the door.
There was no response, so she entered the room.
"What are you doing?" she asked, seeing her husband packing clothes.
"Give me the perfume behind you," he said, ignoring her question.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked again, curiosity etched on her face.
"Honey, remember when I told you I signed a contract with the moving industry?"
"Yes, I remember," she replied, standing beside him.
"They haven't called me since last week, but now they want me to come tomorrow. I'm leaving today."
"What? You're leaving us now?" Miss Maxwell asked, shocked.
"Yes, with all my heart. I'm doing this for us to escape poverty. I want us to get rich, and now is the opportunity," Mr. Waze explained.
"But honey, it's raining heavily outside," Miss Maxwell pleaded.
"I'll be alright. I've already boarded a taxi waiting for me outside. I left some money on the table. Take care of yourself and our daughter, okay?" Mr. Waze said, spraying perfume.
Miss Maxwell had a strange feeling.
"Honey, don't go today, please. I had a bad feeling, like something terrible will happen today."
"What do you want? Something terrible to happen to me? You want me dead, right?" Mr. Waze asked, annoyance on his face.
"No, it's not what you think. I just had a bad feeling," Miss Maxwell clarified.
"Listen, honey, nothing will happen to me. I assure you it will only take a few months, and I'll be right back home," he said, touching her shoulder.
Before Mrs .Maxwell could respond, Mr maxwell interrupted her with a kiss.
"Where are you, Mom and Dad?" little Alicia's voice echoed from the parlor.
"We're coming, sweetheart," her mom replied.
"Let's go downstairs before she freaks out," Mrs. Maxwell joked.
"Dad, where are you going?" Alicia asked, spotting her dad with luggage.
"I'm going to give Grandma this bag," Miss Maxwell said.
"When are you coming back?" Alicia asked.
"I don't know yet, sweetie," Miss Maxwell replied.
"Okay, but Dad, I'll miss you," Alicia said, hugging her dad tightly.
"Me too, sweetheart," Mr. Maxwell said, smiling.
