Kevon stared across the room at Leonardo, his heart pounding slightly as their eyes met for the briefest of moments.
The boy in question had a gaze which was calm yet detached, like he was looking through Kevon rather than at him. There was no malice though, not even curiosity—just a silent, unreadable expression. Exactly the same as before.
The first thing that Kevon noticed was how quietly Leonardo moved, even in a room full of shifting bodies and murmurs mouths.
While most of the other students were already talking with their assigned partners, Leonardo hadn’t uttered a single word. He merely stood there, waiting, like someone who had been through this routine countless times before and found it tiresome.
Kevon felt an odd sense of unease rise within him, but he swallowed it down. This was just another pairing, another forced interaction in a world where everyone either tried to crush you or drag you into their mess. He wouldn’t allow himself to be affected. Not when it had happened to him before.
Jahvi, who was sightly away from him with his own partner, gave Kevon an encouraging nudge, his excitement undiminished by the fact they weren’t paired together. "You got Moonblood? Dude, that guy’s a Beta wolf. He’s pretty quiet though. Selective mute, or something like that. But don’t worry, I heard he’s solid in combat classes. Should be a good partner for Mystic Arts. After all his grandfather is the headmaster of SAYS."
Kevon raised an eyebrow at that. Grandfather? Why would his very own blood relative do such a thing to them then? Things just did not add up.
Kevon's experiences with shifters hadn’t been great—too much aggression, too much dominance, all of it fueling the same toxic system that had broken him in the first place. But this wolf seemed… different. Maybe Jahvi was right. Or maybe it was just another lesson in not trusting anyone. He wasn't really sure.
“Great,” Kevon muttered, standing up from his seat. He walked across the room, careful not to make eye contact with the others, and approached Leonardo, whose pale eyes followed his every step but remained distant and cold.
For a few moments, neither of them said anything. It wasn’t like Kevon expected Leonardo to speak, but the silence felt heavy between them.
Awkward.
Kevon crossed his arms, his eyes twitching slightly as he cleared his throat.
"So," he said, trying to sound indifferent, "looks like we’re paired up."
Leonardo just nodded once, his face unreadable.
Kevon waited for some sort of reaction—anything at all—but Leonardo simply turned his head toward the front of the room where Professor Idris was giving more instructions for the day’s exercise.
"As I mentioned earlier," Professor Idris began, his eyes sweeping over the class, "you will be practicing energy manipulation. This is not about raw power but control. Spiritual energy flows through all of you, and it must be handled with precision. A single lapse in concentration, and the energy can spiral out of control, as many of you are aware."
Kevon shifted uneasily. He knew all too well what could happen when spiritual energy was pushed beyond its limits. He’d experienced it himself more than once, and the results had never been pretty.
"The goal today is to create and maintain a small manifestation of spiritual energy. Something simple, a projection of your power that requires balance between both partners. One of you will draw on the energy of the room, and the other will act as a stabilizer, ensuring that the projection doesn’t collapse or become too volatile."
