As Kevon walked out of the Mystic Arts classroom, he felt Jahvi’s presence before he heard him.
The blinding smile and the bright energy that radiated off him—it was impossible to miss. Kevon sighed inwardly, already bracing for the flood of conversation that was about to come.
"Kevon!" Jahvi called, catching up to him with his usual wide grin plastered on his face. "So, how was it working with Leonardo? I saw you two were paired up. Lucky you! He's like, super calm and all. Bet he didn’t give you any trouble, huh?"
Kevon glanced sideways at Jahvi, keeping his expression as neutral as possible. He wasn’t sure how much he wanted to say. He was not even sure that there was much to talk about in the first place.
"It was fine," he muttered, hoping that would be enough to satisfy Jahvi’s curiosity.
But, of course, Jahvi wasn’t one to be discouraged so easily. "Fine? Come on, that’s it? You guys seemed to work really well together. I mean, you didn’t blow anything up like me, and Leonardo—he’s like a hunk, huh? I’d have been so nervous paired with him, you know? All those rumors about him being a outcast Beta and a mute… kind of intimidating and freaky, if you ask me."
Kevon shrugged. "He didn’t talk much. Just helped stabilize the energy."
Jahvi let out a soft laugh. "Figures. Well, at least you didn’t get stuck with someone like Mike. Imagine having to deal with that jerk in Mystic Arts! You would’ve had to dodge more than just spells."
Kevon smirked slightly at that, remembering how Mike had acted the day before. He didn’t respond, though because Jahvi seemed to be the kind of person who filled silences with chatter, and Kevon wasn’t in the mood to open up about Leonardo or anything else for that matter.
As they walked through the halls, heading toward their next class, Kevon noticed that Jahvi’s smile faltered a little, his right ear twitching nervously. It was subtle, but it was there—Jahvi was uneasy.
"What’s with you?" Kevon asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Jahvi glanced over at him, his usual brightness dimming for the first time since they’d met. "It’s just… Combat Training is next. And, you know… shifters. They’re always so intense. I mean, you’ve probably seen how they act, right? They don’t exactly play nice or fair, and I’ve heard stories. Fairies don’t exactly do well in those classes."
Kevon stopped walking for a moment, frowning. He had heard the same things. Shifters dominated Combat Training—wolves, nagas, and even the occasional druid.
They were built for physical confrontations, and fairies, by nature, were not. They could fly, they had magic, but in close quarters? They were at a serious disadvantage. Most fairies, unless they were incredibly powerful, weren’t much of a match for a wolf’s raw strength or a naga’s speed.
"Look," Kevon said, his tone slightly softer than usual, "just keep your head down. Don’t give them any reason to come after you."
Jahvi nodded quickly, but Kevon could tell he was still nervous. "Yeah, I know, but it’s not just that. I’m not exactly great at the whole fighting thing. I’m more of a... peacekeeper, you know? With being a light fairy and all. I’ve never really had to throw punches or cast offensive spells. What if I get paired up with a shifter? They’ll tear me apart."
Kevon thought for a moment. He hadn’t been too thrilled about Combat Training himself, but Jahvi’s nervousness was almost contagious. He didn’t like to admit it, but part of him felt a little bad for the guy.
Jahvi’s optimism and brightness, as irritating as it could be, wasn’t something Kevon wanted to see crushed.
"You’ll be fine," Kevon muttered, though even he wasn’t sure how much he believed that. "They can’t go too far. It’s still training, not a death match."
