My teammates and I arrived back at the Etihad after the street parade in the highest of spirits. Most of us were tipsy, some were drunk, and then there was Jack - guy was completely out of it, I bet he didn't even know what planet he was on right now. But we still had our team party to attend which was mostly thrown for the staff and Pep had instructed us on being overly friendly to everyone and small-talk with them to thank them for their efforts and make them feel appreciated. He was right, a football club wasn't just the starting eleven star players, there were hundreds of people behind the scenes ensuring that we could perform at the highest level.

And so we showered and put on some nice clothes before walking down to the atrium, where lots of people were already downing champagne and spritz's. Our families had also been invited along to celebrate and I quickly found my brother Ivan who was trying, really trying, to have a conversation with Jack. I joined them and took a random glass from the next waiter that was passing.

"Hey!" I heard a familiar voice behind me and I slowly turned around to be faced with the most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on. Coward me never had the guts to ask the daughter of a staff member out and now she was dating some way older dickhead that was already suspicious to me.
"Hi!" I replied brightly and saw the other two boys in the corner of my eyes looking at me and her curiously.

"Uh, this is my brother Ivan and... you know who Jack is" I muttered and pointed at everyone.
"Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm Sophia" she replied friendly and shook their hands.
"Sophia- you're Sophia?" Jack hiccuped and I tried to elbow him in the ribs as unsuspiciously as possible. But my brother had to chime in too.
"Sophia!" he exclaimed, immediately knowing who this was as I hadn't been able to stop yapping about her for the past three years.

"Um-yes?" she kind of half-asked with a shy smile on her face, probably wondering why everyone apparently knew her.
"No, I mean- I was seeing a girl named Sofia... two months ago or so... but... um... different Sofia" I tried to salvage the situation.
"Oh" she just said, her face falling a bit, which I found weird. Ivan looked at me sideways, knowing damn well that there wasn't a hookup named Sofia. Well, there were others, lots of others. I knew who I was and I took advantage of it, especially when the girl I liked was unavailable anyways.

"Jack, there you are! Come on, let's get you over to your parents!" Sasha exclaimed when she found her boyfriend again. She greeted our small group and dragged away her boyfriend, probably in an effort so that he couldn't embarrass himself any more.
"Congratulations by the way, I'm so happy for you- and the team!" Sophia said with a bright smile that was contagious.
"Thanks, I-" I started, but we were interrupted by a guy that put his arm around her shoulder.

"There you are! It's time to go" he announced and I raised my eyebrows.
"Ed this is Ruben and Ivan" she tried to say calmly and the guy looked at us unimpressed as he gave us a curt nod. "Just one minute, I was just talking-" she was trying to counter, but that guy wasn't having it.
"You should go home. You have a heart transplant early tomorrow" he cut her off and she nodded shyly.

"It's my first heart transplant where I'm assisting! I'm really excited!" she told me and my brother excitedly and her face was glowing again.
"Wow! That's so cool-" Ivan replied, but he was cut off too by the slimy boyfriend.
"Yeah, I put her on the team. Surgeon is a friend of mine." he told us proudly and I just raised my eyebrows because he wasn't impressing me one bit.

"Anyways, we have to go, I'm parked in a loading area and probably should move" he said in a monotonous voice that just made me raise my eyebrows, again.
"Yeah, ok" she mumbled disappointedly. "Bye, Ruben and congrats again. Goodbye Ivan, it was nice meeting you" she mumbled at the ground, not really able to look us in the eyes before turning around and walking away with that guy who had his hand firmly on her shoulder.

"Poor girl" Ivan sighed when they were out of sight again.
"That guy's a complete dick. Why do girls always fall for that sort of men?" I scoffed and downed the rest of my glass in frustration. I put it on some random table and made my way through the crowd frustratedly. I greeted some staff here and there and did as Pep had told us but the appearance of that Ed guy had turned my great mood into a sour one.

"Hey Ruben! Congrats on the treble!" I heard another familiar voice say and turned around to see Sophia's brother James.
"Thanks bro! Your time will come too" I replied and ruffled through his hair. "How was Sheffield?" I asked as he had gone on a loan there this season.
"Really good. 5 assists and 9 goals all season. But I'm improving every day" he replied proudly. "I'll be going there next season too I think" he added.
"That's great. Playing experience is everything and your time will come" I encouraged him.

"By the way, I met your brother-in-law" I added, curious to know his opinion about that Ed guy.
"Please tell me my brother has turned gay and found a boyfriend and you're not talking about my sister's fella" he groaned.
"Nope, I am in fact talking about the hotshot surgeon" I chuckled, even though I wasn't in the mood of being funny at all.

"Oh gosh I can't stand him. He's boring and controlling. You know how Soph was before! Now, she's... just his doll. She doesn't go out with her friends anymore... or us for that matter. Ed makes sure she works overtime every day so that he has her under his control at the hospital. At least that's my theory" he brabbled, seemingly happy to have found someone to let out his annoyance to.

"And what do your parents say?" I asked and furrowed my eyebrows. The more I heard about that guy, the more I hated him.
"Dad loves him. A doctor and... he is pretty good at doing his job. But still, completely the wrong guy for Soph" he muttered. I just hummed, not really knowing what to say or do. It hurt me to see Soph with a guy that clearly didn't deserve her, but I also didn't know if it was my place to intervene or how to even do that.
