THE SOMEWHAT VACANT Greyhound bus stopped in an intersection of what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. One man came out of the bus, stepping out into the rain and stomping his boots onto the wet asphalt. Moments later, the bus drove away, leaving him there alone.

He made his way through the barren road. As time went on and miles were trekked, the rain stopped. He neared a sign and eyed it as he continued walking.

The man continued walking until he reached a diner on the outskirts of the town. He neared the entrance when a couple suddenly stormed out of the establishment. The man grabbed the woman by the arm and forcefully pulled her.

"I'm sorry! I—I'm not good at math." She apologized.

"That was like a 40% tip!" The man scolded.

"I messed up, okay?"

The man pinned her against the side of his van by the front of the diner and got in her face.

"How am I supposed to get ahead when you're wasting my goddamn money?"

The woman didn't respond, which angered him further. He slammed his hand against the van and startled her.

"Just get your ass in the van."

The boyfriend turned and stopped when he saw the tall man standing and staring at him. He scoffed and called out to him.

"The hell you want, asshole?"

He said nothing in response. The man called out again.

"I'm talking to you, stupid."

Still nothing. The stern gaze of the silent man started to make the verbally abusive boyfriend uncomfortable.

He looked the man up and down, noticing how large and burly he was. He swallowed and dropped his shoulders.

"Listen, man...I'm just having a bad day." He told him, now in a rather feeble tone. "Won't happen again."

The boyfriend backed away and walked to the other side of the van. The girlfriend just looked at the tall man, thankful for his silent yet effective interference. The man still didn't say a word and simply made his way into the diner.
